I need some help in figuring out my next steps. Here's the situation:
Yesterday I was installing one application on my first gen iPhone while using another when it froze badly, it had gotten quite hot by then (especially towards the top), it was connected to the charger. It did not react to force quitting the program (5 seconds of the home button), or force restarting (ten seconds of both home and screen lock buttons). Ultimately it did restart but since then never gets beyond the apple logo. It starts up, after a while gives a double vibration as if just plugged into power (no power sign or loading battery appear though), and after a few minutes it will do this double vibe a second time. However it does not complete its boot sequence and remains with the apple logo on screen.
When connecting it to a computer, after a while it shows up in iTunes and iPhoto. iPhoto is able to download photos until it does its second double vibe at which moment iPhoto thinks it's done importing (while it's not). It continues to see the iPhone, but starting an import at that point won't load anything. iTunes becomes unresponsive as soon as the iPhone is recognized, but does seem to communicate with it, since when I unplug the iPhone, iTunes instantly becomes responsive and shows the iPhone home screen, with information about memory allocation and software version etc. However this screen is only available for about two seconds until iTunes realizes the iPhone has been unplugged. When left connected to the computer it gets rather hot after a while, starting at the top and spreading down.
I've run the battery empty to try to force a maximum reset, but to no avail.
It's a first generation iPhone, with software version 2.0, connecting to iTunes 8.0.1 on MacOS X 10.4.11. I'd hate to have to bring it in because I'd love to be able to get to the data on it before it gets wiped or replaced. I don't have a recent backup (yes, I know, no need to preach me on it) and I'd loose NetShare for instance, which I have currently installed.
What to do, what to do...
