is it possible for me to go buy the phone 3g and not buy to internet package and just get on the applications that use internet through areas with wifi as the ipod touch does?

Just make sure you have Internet disabled or you'll still have it but not a plan and get fat fees

You canno tget an iPhone without a data package, and if you do manage AT&T will catch you and charge you per use data. Goto any AT&T store, they'll repeat the same. Trust me, others poster before me have no clue (US only for this paragraph)

You have to sign up for it but it can be cancelled. That's what I did with my first iPhone. I got it and then cancelled it and had AT&T stop all data. Then when I got my 3g iPhone I decided I'd use Internet so kept the data plan. So I do in fact have a clue.
