Yes there is. You must first jailbreak the iphone first. Then you can download a program called iBlacklist from cydia. It will prevent the text message box from popping up but still play the sound. It works pretty good. You can also filter phone calls and text messages as well.

well, after the first text you cannot read anything if you don't/can't open the iphone.
just password protect it.

thanks for your information. i've tried it. yes,no others can get my private information. even they let me put the password, i just pretended to put in the right one, so there is nothing there after get in! HAHA great work!

i have a question though? what if you dont want to jailbreak your iphone but still dont want people to see?

When you set the Passcode Lock (Settings>General>Passcode Lock) there is an option to show SMS preview. Set this to OFF. Voila!
