I have been thinking of giving the Touch to my wife, as she loves it. What is the cheapest plan I could get, with unlimited data. I could care less about minutes and text, as I am more interested in having the internet features anywhere I travel.

Am I limited to ATT/Cingular? Or could I unlock and go with someone else with a better rate?

You can unlock and go with T-Mobile. That is the only option you have in the US. The cheapest plan depends on if you are getting an older 2G iphone or the new 3G. The new 3G plan will cost you a minimum $69.99. That will get you 450min and Unlimited data. The older 2G plan is 59.99 with the same thing.

Cheapest plan:

$39.00 - voice 450 minutes 5,000 night and weekend
$30.00 - Unlimited data (including internet)

Total: $8x.xx

Is that ATT or T-mobile?

Is that ATT or T-mobile?AT&T is minimum $69.99. T-Mobile I believe has a similar unlimited data price but you might be able to get a cheaper voice plan (with less minutes).

You separated the phone and data portions; that's why it looked like much cheaper than the cheapest AT&T plan ($69.99). :)

AN iPod Touch. AN iPhone. Not a iPod. Not a iPhone.

Had to be said.

One of my pet peeves too. :D

I am considering buying an iPod Touch before an iPhone, since my T-Mobile contract won't expire for another 6 months, and I'd rather not pony up an ETF on top of the cost of the phone and the rate plan, plus whatever contract deposit I might or might not have to pay.

Dr. Gonzo...personally I think it is a waste getting an iPod Touch if you are just going to get an iPhone a few months later. The only reason you would want an iPod Touch and an iPhone is if you got the 32GB iPod Touch, but you would need pretty deep pockets for that. I would just wait it out, pay the ETF, or pay for you iPhone while you are paying for T-Mobile for the remaining 6 months. The only bummer about the iPhone is that you do get locked into a contract, but I couldn't live with the iPod Touch without the phone capabilities and not being able to access the internet and email all the time.
