I just bought a 3rd generation nano and when I go to sync it for the first time I get an error message during the format process every time. Has anyone else run into this? If so can anyone give some tips on how to fix?

Assuming you have all your music on it backed up on your computer(Or you'll LOSE IT), when you first plug it in, and it shows up in the iTunes screen, try hitting the RESTORE tab.
It will restore it back to the previous settings, and empty the iPod. Then you start again.
I had a similar problem yesterday syncing my iPod video. I did a full restore and it worked fine(Although it took nearly 6 hours to re-sync my 80GB music library...).
