Hi,

I'm interested in buying an ITouch (2nd Gen) but I'm unsure if it will work with my current Apple iPod Hi-Fi system. I've received two opposing views:-

1. Won't work becuase of a new connection on the latest iPods (Apple shop in Glasgow)

2. Will work support. apple. com/kb/HT1640#faq1 (apples website)

iPod HiFi amazon. co. uk/Apple-ipodhifi-iPod-HiFi-System/dp/B000ETZ9SK

I want to use the Dock connection and don't want contemplate using the ear phone socket as a work around.

Does anyone have any experience with these two products?

Thanks,

It should work fine. I know my iPod touch works fine with several older speaker systems. The only difference between the dock connector on the iPod touch and on older models (5G, etc.) is that the newer models have a different video-out method, which the iPod Hi-Fi doesn't support anyway.

I am not sure if it will work though. I have a iPod hi-fi but it is currently in storage so I can't test it. I know that the 1G iPod touch works but the 2G iPod touch is no longer compatible with the older charging methods and audio output methods. I believe that Engadget reported that the 2G iPod touch won't work with the iPod hi-fi system as the hi-fi uses the older firewire method for charging iPods. Audio output might still work but I don't think it will be able to charge the 2G iPod touch.

I looked on Apple's website and they no longer have a page for the iPod hi-fi. This is because Apple said that they are no longer going to support the hi-fi. Could you provide the link that you are looking at on Apple's website? I found the older iPod hi-fi website but only on their Canadian website and all of the information is outdated by 2 years.

I've been hearing that they still work with all the old systems, however they will not charge while on the system.

Hmm... That looks confusing as the iPod hi-fi uses a different charging method (the older firewire standard) that I know is not supported on the new 2G iPod touch. It is too bad that Apple no longer sells the iPod hi-fi as you could have tried it out in their store. Mine is in storage and I am sorry but I am not about to go dig it out to try it. So I am still going to say that audio transmission will more than likely work but it won't charge the 2G iPod touch.

Apple employees told me it won't charge a 2G. Given that many older docks don't, that seems a fair bet. :)
