How do you tell the difference (S/N, functions) between the G1 and G2 touch models?

I have the same question; if you don't mind me putting it in here... If you want me to edit it out i will, and if a mod wants it gone then feel free to delete it.
I've been comparing the ipod touch 1st and 2nd gen. Is the only difference the dedicated music buttons, speaker, and new firmware? I could update the firmware ($10) and live without the dedicated music buttons and the speaker. Is there a difference at all on what apps you can run from the app store depending on what ipod touch you have? Also, would my V-Moda Vibe headphones fit in the headphone jack? I remember alot of people had to buy adapters (or something like that), but that might of just been the iphone. I can get a 16gb refurb 1st gen touch from apple for $230.00 including the $10 firmware update, and i can get a 8gb 2nd gen touch for $230.00.
