So I've been lurking these forms since getting my first ipod touch (1st gen) earlier this week. I kind of laughed at the number of "help me i broke my ipod" threads, and I apologize for starting one of my own. Buuut, I suck at life and apparently I couldn't avoid it.

To keep a short story short (as i can tend to be long winded about mundane things), basics are this: I had my ipod touch in my shirt pocket and it fell into our toilet (a very flushed toilet, thankyouverymuch... had it not been it would be in the trash right now, no questions asked). Total submersion, the whole 9 yards. So it is obviously not working right now.

My question is this: can I safely assume that there is no redeeming the ipod? Like, letting it sit to dry for several days won't improve things, right?

Question two, assuming the above is a negative: 1st gen refurb. for $319 or 2nd gen new for $399? In other words, is there enough difference between the two to make the $80 worthwhile?

My girlfriend's iPod nano fell into a lake a few months ago and she was able to dry it off, clean it off and now it's working. Although for a while, she couldn't turn it off so it kept running.

Turn in completely off. Lieave it in a bowl of rice for a few days, it may, slim chance, but may come back

Yah dude, don't mess with the buttons, like try to turn it on or anything, let it air dry! Lots of cell phones have fallen into toilets and sinks full of water and have worked after they air dried.

you could let it dry up and then take it back to where you bought and tellthem it just doesn't work anymore, just don't tell them that you dropped it in the toilet. Unlikely they won't be able to tell if you did or not unless they opened it up, which I doubt they'll do.

Thanks for the responses everyone.

It is still not turning on, so it isn't looking too good for the home team. Wish I could have thought of FirstDeadlySin's suggestion right away. Might not have made a difference... but I'm sure my blind frantic pushing of anything and everything wasn't really helping at all.

I got it direct from Apple, but maybe I should try calling them and being all "YO, I got a refurb in the mail and today it isn't turning on!" Maybe since it is a refurbished 'pod they'd be less likely to assume any failure on the ipod's part is my dealing. Still, I have this suspicion that they have ways to test for Total Immersion Experiences.

Well with my girlfriend, it's taken 2 months for it to get back to normal and it took 3 days for it to completely air out and function again

Hang in there

Please don't be a douche. Face up to what you did and tell them the truth, and then use your head and take care of your device next time. It isn't the vendor/manufacturer's fault that you dropped your iPod in the can, and it is ridiculous for you to suggest that they should subsidize your irresponsibility.

Couple suggestions. If you search the forums, lots of people have suggested dropping your iPod into a sealed bag of DRY rice and letting it sit for a few days. The rice will help absorb any moisture. There are also suggestions of using rubbing alcohol or similar to rinse out any water and then letting the alcohol dry out (but I've not tried it myself so your mileage may vary).

As for trying to send it back to Apple, don't bother trying. If you haven't heard already, there is a little piece of paper in the headphone jack that changes color when exposed to water. I'm sure it was checked before they sent it to you, and I'm sure its the first thing they'd check when it was sent back. If the water "sensor" paper has changed color, you're S.O.L.
