You guys dont get tired of having that much music in your Ipod???
Right now I have like 4 Gigs of music in my Ipod, I dont know how you guys can have that much music in your Ipod and not get tired of them, In a while I get tired of some of the songs and take them off my ipod. Thats why I dont have problem with a 8GB Ipod Touch haha. Anywho for the people who have a major amount of songs then please tell me why, Just wanna know.
I may have dozens of gigs of music that doesn't get listened to over the course of a year or so, but I typically come around to it eventually. If not, I sell it. I'm mostly an album listener, not a singles listener, so that may contribute.
See, I dont understand how you can only have like 4 gigs of music. that to me says that you really dont like that music. I have just about 60 gbs myself, but like to sample new music, and am a fan of many bands that I like to have the anthology of. I'm a big beatles fan, and i want all their albums. same goes for the Rolling Stones and the Who. That ALONE is about 4gigs. not to mention im a big fan of lots of newer music, the white stripes, arcade fire, well.. i could list them all but i have like 9,000 songs on my ipod. add in videos (which i dont have room for) as well as books on tape, podcasts etc. and 60gb ipods, and especially the 32gb ipod touch starts to look pretty lame.
I'm a big beatles fan, and i want all their albums. same goes for the Rolling Stones and the Who. Yep, I have a number of bands where I have most or all of their albums. The size adds up, especially if one listens at high bit rates.

Seems strange to say we must get tired of 60gb of music when you only have 4, it just means we never have to worry about wanting to hear a sing and not being able to. Although saying that I have ordered the 8gb touch... wish I had the money for the 16 or 32!

I have almost 4 gigs of music in my ipod, but I have like over 9 gigs in my itunes, I just choose to not put it in my Ipod, right now I have a 8gb nano so even if I wanted to I cant put it in my nano.
you shouldve waited until you get the money for the 16 gig, but I understand that its just impossible to wait for something you really want, I can barely wait until saturday lol.

I have 56gb in my iTunes heh... got a nice playlist of 500 or so songs I really like which I'll add to as I go.
You're right though, I should have waited but the extra £50 and the fact I wanted it now were enough to make me buy the 8gb :D

My library is about 350GB in size (the exact number is in my sig). It is this size as I have many different albums from many different bands. I can easily fill 4GB with just 3/4 of Korn's discography. Well, I like to listen to more bands than just one so my playlists often contain 3-4 songs from each artist from each album. I like variety in my metal music and listen to artists including Korn, Dimmu Borgir, Dream Theater, Disturbed, Slipknot, Head, Diecast, Atreyu, etc. So my "best of" playlist will often contain over 2000 songs and come it at 13-14GB. I will listen to that playlist for about 1.5-2 weeks and then run out of songs. I add some more songs, delete some songs, reshuffle everything, and then sync it back to my iPod.
That way I don't get tired of songs (repeating a song once every 2 weeks does not get tiring) and still keep my playlist fresh. So I don't carry around every single song with me, just ones that I pick and choose.

oh.....
When I get bored of the song I just take it off my ipod.
The difference between us and you is that we don't get tired of music because no one artist or album or track is played to death.
I primarily use smartlists to rotate music on and off my iPod automatically such that although my library comes in at over 30,000 tracks and over 190GB, I never have to move music on and off manually. I also have a folder of playlists that acts like a very large CD changer for full albums that I swap albums out as they get played X number of times (really wish there was a way to do this with smartlists but oh well).
This way, some of the music might only be played once a year (or less), but that's fine, my favorites rotate through every few weeks or maybe a couple of months, but that's fine, too. Music is something that is very entwined with my memory process. I've found albums that I literally haven't heard in 20 years since the cassette died and, as soon as I hear a little of a track, it all comes back to me.
Sure, hypothetically, I'd probably enjoy listening more if I could get the collection somewhat more focused (say 20,000 tracks) but the truth is that I'd be missing out on the constant music exploration.

if you encode your iTunes to import at lossless you can get a 60Gb library very easily....!
my music library is currently only 44Gb, but that's 6800 tracks worth, most of it at 192 AAC. If i buy off the iTMS i'm trying to stick to iTunes Plus only, and eMusic encodes at fairly decent bit rates.
I've just found some excellent DJ mixes and they're at least 150Mb each!

Slightly under 80gb here on mine.
About 20,000 songs.
I have everything I own on it and would not have it any other way. I never know when the mood will hit me to want to hear something, and I have everything right at my fingertips when I want to hear it.

Same thing as many have already said. I like to encode my music at a decent bit rate so it's good quality, also I'm a big U2 fan so I have more than 4 gigs of music with U2 alone.
To me one of the biggest advantage of having a Portable Music Player is that I can carry almost all my music with me at all time and be free to listsen to whatever I feel like to listen....so no point in having just 4 or even 8 Gigs.

Well, I've only got about 35GB or so right now, but my "music" is a lot longer. I listen to old time radio (OTR) shows that I get off of Archive.org (they've thousands of old programs - Jack Benny, Abbott & Costello, Lux Radio Theater, etc.). Since they're from old radio and pretty low quality LPs, they're usually encoded at 32kbps or so which is more than adequate for the sound quality and I get a 1/2 hour program in only 5MB. With my 16GB iPod Touch, I can fill it up with enough programs to listen for several hours a day for several months without duplicating anything... And yes, I like music - I've got about 300 CDs (yes, I'm old) and several hundred songs I purchased via iTunes, but I became bored listening to the same stuff over and over and couldn't justify buying a lot of new music all the time... Still, I don't need to have all my music with me all the time...

See, I dont understand how you can only have like 4 gigs of music. that to me says that you really dont like that music.
not so sure i agree with that logic, because your library is larger than mine, you like music more? IMHO, i always thought the "i" in ipod stood for individual, and that people could have as much music as they wanted, and listen to whatever they wanted, anyway they wanted, without others judging them.
my library is about 8 gigs. and i love music, i am passionate about it.
i can understand the desire to have a larger library, and if i had the time i would love to have more music. also, with smart playlists like code monkey mentions, it is a great way to keep your music sounding fresh. but managing a smaller library works great for me.
when i first got an ipod (my third gen in all its 10gb awsomeness!) i was totally on the gotta have every song in my pocket bandwagon. but as i started putting my large cd collection into itunes, i realized there are a lot of songs i never listen to, and doubt i would miss. even with my favorites like U2 and the Beatles, i do not have all their songs. i actually go through my library from time to time and delete music with a 0 or 1 play count (except for any itunes purchased music). have not once regretted it. it is what works for me, just my personal choice.
as i have gotten older, i have switched from needing to buy whole cds or every cd from a group. i use itunes frequently to buy songs from vinyl albums i used to own (yes, i am that old). for example, i used to have a lot of Rush albums (a favorite of an iLounge editor!), but always felt it too expensive to buy the CDs and no greatest hits included all the songs i wanted. with itunes, i just purchased the songs i really wanted, made a playlist, and there is my own personal Rush album. no need to have several GBs of Rush albums when all i really wanted was 12 songs.
also, unless it is new music from a favorite, like U2, radiohead, the arcade fire, or a greatest hits package, i do not immediately buy the whole CD. i no longer feel the need to buy a cd just because it comes from a group i like, pearl jam and the foo fighters are some examples for me. but i will pick up a song or two from them on itunes. do i miss out on discovering some great songs? yes. but do i get music i enjoy? yes. it works for me and makes me happy.

i have a really small library right now... just to please my 8gb touch.
i always want to have at least 1GB free on my touch, but my library is sometimes pretty big. i love having loads of songs from one artist, so i can broaden my knowledge about their songs. i cant only have a single from an artist, or i just wont be able to tell how the artist is.
im pretty bummed though, as i bought the 8BG and not the 16GB in november 2007. :P
is anybody else regretting getting an 8GB rather than 16GB, or am i the only one?

oh, I didnt know I was supposed to have like 20,000 songs in order for me to like music
If I dont like it "anymore" i take it off because I dont listen to it anymore, if I feel like listening to a certain track I will go on the comp. 8GB isnt a problem for me because I dont keep all my songs in my ipod even if im not gonna listen to it anymore.

Well, you did sorta set the tone of the thread by starting the title w/ "Wtf?..............."
And in answer to your original question: of course I don't get tired of having "that much music" with me at all times. (After all, it doesn't make the 'pod weigh any more.) What I would get tired of is swapping music out all the time...or even more than a few times. I prefer to simply add music as I get it and listen when/where/how/as often as I like, rather than being tethered to a comp if I fell like listening to something I'd deleted off the player.
Plus, I like having my 500+ (and growing) collection of CDs at my fingertips/in my pocket for two reasons: I love to shuffle the entire collection to see what mashups might happen (Ella Fitzgerald followed by Rage Against the Machine, for example), and; I can listen to entire albums as the artists originally intended--and I can do that anytime I want. Smart playlists also make it easy to manage the "random" nature of the shuffle function.
That's just me...wtf izzat to you? ;)

I didn't realize that we only needed to carry around 4GB of music to fully enjoy our libraries. People have different sized libraries and different sized playlists that they carry around with them. So what if someone has a 60GB+ library? So what if they want to carry around all the songs in their library? That is why Apple made a 120GB iPod classic and a 32GB iPod touch. Not everyone is content with a 8GB iPod nano/touch. You are so that is fine with you, I am not so that is fine with me.
There was another thread where I told you that negative posts that attack would get deleted. Well, the nature of your beginning post is a little negative so expect some negative replies. The above post that I quoted is also a little negative. So the whole tone of this thread is negative. Remember that people are very sensitive about their music and anyone who judges it (whether it be the music itself or the size of a library) is seen as attacking it.

What--do you sync your iPod like, every other blue moon? If, as I suspect, you do sync a bit more frequently than that...how "tired" (the word you used) could one become just from swapping music? I didn't realize that swapping music was such a "strenuous" activity... ;)

with itunes, i just purchased the songs i really wanted, made a playlist, and there is my own personal Rush album. no need to have several GBs of Rush albums when all i really wanted was 12 songs.
....and that's what I find a bit sad. What you have there is not a Rush album IMHO, it is a Rush 'collection'. An album is a collection of songs bound together by time or concept. When I worked in a music shop, we used to get new applicants to list their favourite albums and I used to get annoyed when people listed things like 'U2s greatest hits'. That's not an album, it's a CD or a collection. It's very important!
CD went some way towards killing the album as it removed the need for listening discipline with it's oh so convenient skip function. MP3s have pretty much put the nail in the coffin. For most, the thought of listening to an album from beginning to end is an alien concept, but for me it's still good to do from time to time. The fillers in an album still form part of the story. Do I really want to listen to the New Orleans Instrumental on Automatic for the people? No, but it is an integral part of the album, and I know it comes after Everybody hurts and before, erm, Ignoreland?
Anyway, for people who like entire albums and are over the age of 35, 80gb is not that much.
Orbs.

Even still, flash capacities serve me just fine as I really don't need to carry around more than a couple hundred discs with me. And 80gb is more than enough to carry all ~500 discs with me. :)

The only synching I do is to add new music and get automatically updated podcasts. Going through and deleting music to gain space if I don't have to (which, coincidentally, I don't) is, to me, st00pid. If I don't like a track/album/band, I don't bother to put it/them on the 'pod at all. To force myself to trade tracks I might be bored with to save space is a hassle and one with which I'd rather not deal. I buy music and DAPs to enjoy, not manage more than necessary.
But that's me--and more than a few others. http://bestsmileys.com/mooners/5.gif

I'll be looking at 40 in a few and having music that goes back to the days I was a long haired freak tooling around town in a beat up 1976 station wagon with a boom box on the back seat because the car stereo had no cassette deck and I was too poor to afford one side by side with all the music I've taken a shine to in the intervening years, 80GB is a bit less than half of all the music I have :)

I have about 120 GB of music, but I've gotten over needing to have it with me at all time. It's a lot easier now that programs like Simplify Media (hopefully they can make the sound quality better or Apple puts their own) and last.fm are coming out. They let you listen to your entire library without it actually being on your player. If Apple gives us a subscription plan you'll be able to stream any album in the store at anytime or download it if you wish. Tthe functionality of a media player means more to me now than how much I can put on it.

i really miss record stores, but i do not miss the snotty guys at the register looking down their nose at me for what i buy, or telling me what i enjoy is a collection and not an album...
as i posted before, i grew up with vinyl albums. and i still often listen to music by albums. my point was that one reason my music library is somewhat small is because i have not gone back and filled in all the gaps from music i used to listen to in different formats. while i could have multiple rush albums taking up lots of hard drive space, i am content with a small sample. also, to me, a group like rush was not about the concept of an album, their music varies little on the albums i used to own. i would not do this for every artist i like. i usually listen to albums like OK Computer, The Joshua Tree, Neon Bible, or Sgt. Peppers all the way thru, but that is how I think they are to be enjoyed. of course i have friends that think all U2 songs sound alike, and are happy with a collection. to each their own...
another reason is that i simply do not have the time to devote myself to all that music. i am able to listen to tunes about an hour a day, so sometimes getting the "greatest hits" of an old favorite is all i have time for, and again, something i enjoy.
my main point from my last post was that who cares how big your music collection is, what is on it, or how you manage it? just enjoy it.......

I have about 100GB of music now. With all the CDs I have collected over the years, all the music I have "downloaded"/borrowed from friends and music downloaded from iTunes, it soon adds up. I am one of these people as well who likes to have full albums. Whole discography's of bands like The Beatles, Metallica and Dream Theater soon add up as well.
I use my iPhone 16GB as my main iPod and just a playlist for my iPhone of my favourite songs and change the songs around and add some new songs to it from my library from time to time. I do have an 80GB iPod as well when I am away for a long time and fancy more music, but for everyday use I can last comfortably with 16GB.

Personally I got 120gigs in my library. Mostly because I don't do singles. If I like a song I buy the whole album. I started my collection working at a music store 11 years ago. I usually just put my iTunes on random and let er rip.

Oh yeah, and Genius in iTunes 8 is really useful for discovering that music you forgot about in your collection, especially if you have a large library. Coupled with Last.FM I can discover loads of new music as well. I don't think I have ever consumed so much music before thanks to the ease of discovering new artists and acquiring the music.

Yes, you have a good point!
We actually weren't like that to be honest, but I was just making the point that MP3 in general has shifted the emphasis onto compilations, playlists and best ofs which I think is a shame. Each to their own of course and there is a lot of satisfaction in being able to skip and get to the next great tune, but I do think that something has been lost along the way, namely the discipline (and reward) of listening to whole albums.

p.s. I will still argue to my dying day that best ofs and collections are NOT albums!

I love discovering albums I had forgotten about, sometimes I reorder my collection so that least plays or no ratings showing first. Music means a lot to me and I never know when I might fancy some of my more obscure tunes.
My whole library isnt really that big, roughly 60gig in total but that includes movies, tv shows, podcasts etc.
I would love to be able to afford a way of getting some of my vinyl onto iTunes, my parents have some amazing albums!
ONLY 4G music? LOL...That's like what, 7 songs?
Seriously, there should be less talk about how many Gigs we have in music and more about the volume in number of tracks.
Gigs refers to the amount of storage space and is not completely indicative of how many songs you have. Higher encoding rates will give you more Gigs with less songs. You could very well have over 4 Billion songs each encoded at 1kb....but of course the quality would be crap (unlistenable fuzz)....
I have just over 80G of music and still haven't transferred all my CDs to mp3s at 192kbs. Plus, your age might also have something to do with it, as with your love of music, or different styles of music etc.....An older person with more love of differing styles is more likely to have accumulated tonnes of music over their life than a teeny bopper who want Hilary Duff and JaRule etc.....

a pretty interesting thread.
I spend a lot of time each day listening to music. I sit at a desk for 9 hours a day and my ipods are going from minute 1 till the minute I leave. Over a course of a week you can play a lot of music.
I have several ipods I bring with me each day. 1 is a Beatles only 60 gig ipod. It is just that - every Beatles album - group AND solo. Every rarity, b side, remix - etc.. It currently has 4258 songs on it. I like to put it no shuffle a lot and listen to that all week.
I have a KISS 40 gig ipod. I loved them as a kid and still do. It has all of their group and solo releases - as well as their contributions as artists on other peoples records. It currently has 2534 tracks on it.
Lastly I have a 160 gig ipod classic. It has everything else other than KISS and the Beatles. Currently it has 25,213 songs on it.
My iphone, itouch and ipod video I have for other uses and none have music on them.
My collection is just under 1 TB - currently about 900 gigs. I ripped my CD collection, my brothers, my sons, my daughters, my wifes, and several of my friends CD's as they bring them over - and add new ones every week. It doesn't take long to reach such a large collection. I am constantly moving albums to and from the ipod classic and playing them at work.

:)
I would be interested in your storage solution.

Some of us have been buying cds for a long time, as well as collecting vinyl (http://forums.ilounge.com/showpost.php?p=959774&postcount=80).
The more music you have the greater the variety thus less boredom, that's how I see it.
200gb digital library, thousand (lost count) vinyl's sitting in a basement somewhere....:D
Yep - part of it is the years spent collecting music.
Bought my first LP (vs 45s) around 1968/69 - Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison. :D
Moved to CDs soon after they came out & started over. Still have about 400 LPs in the house - have already digitized a number of them that can't be obtained on CD. I actually still have a stack of a few dozen 45s.
I love being able to pick almost anything that suits the mood - everything from Led Zep to Bill Monroe to Charley Patton to the Old 97s....or Duke Ellington to Muddy Waters to Annie Lennox.... like you say, the more music you have...

Its also funny how you can have an artist in your collection that you always skip over when scrolling through the ipod but on the road or at work you hit shuffle and it brings up a song from one of these artist and all of the sudden you want to listen to them for the next week.

As in the files themselves?
Or the actual CD's??
The files I have on an external 1 TB drive (along with a 1 TB backup drive of course).
The CD's themselves are currently boxed up in a storage unit as I am in the midst of a pending move :D - but normally are in several 6 foot wall unit display cases.

I am close to 60 gigs myself. It takes a while but I do generally get to every album when I have the time. I listen to music all day at work , so sometimes I will just get crazy and start with a letter and pick an album that I haven't listened too. Today for example was B. ...

I get into musical moods: one hour I'm feeling like some hardcore punk (Black Flag/Channel 3) and the next I may feel like some poppy punk-ska (Rancid - they have tons of albums just themselves alone) the next day maybe some jazz (Ella Fitzgerald/Henri Mancini) the next week I might be into 80's top 40 singles, and then you have my Jillian Michaels podcasts from KFI I need to catch up on... it's easy for me to fill up my 40gig :)

I've got about 5.49 gigs of music in my iTunes, and that was mostly singles. Now I like to listen to the whole album, because the single will get boring over time. And I have about 3.55 gigs of video on my 80GB classic. I don't mind listening to one song out of the whole album over and over, but it's nice to have those other songs in that 80GB that I have to fill up. :)

Pushing 10GB [~2000 songs] on my 4g nano and 60GB on my 120 Classic. I prefer to use the classic when I'm tired of listening to the same ol same ol stuff on my nano..or to find new music that I like.
