View Full Version : Shall I wait for more Space?

Right from the beginning I always thought the Touch was great. But at the time I just couldn't sacrifice space, so I went with the iPod Classic 80gb. Now with the second generation touch and 32 gb of storage I'm thinking about getting one in the future, or just when I have enough money. Does anyone know whether Apple will be coming out with one with more space? Or would it be impossible to match 80gb? I'm starting to realize now that I don't watch many videos, I am willing to sacrifice a few videos for more song space. Basically I am asking if anyone thinks a new Touch with more space is in the works?

I was in exactly the same position as you, wanted the touch, but went with the Classic for the space. I'm currently waiting for my 32GB Touch to get here. I'll have to sacrifice a few movies and podcasts for music space, but that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.

Just remember, there will always be a better, more powerful option right around the corner. :)

How many GB do you have on your classic?

im also in the same debate. The Ipod touch is great, and i love the technology, but the capacity is crap. Apple opted for Thinness and price point over giving a real ipod people could put their music collection into. sad. I'm thinking about getting the 120gb classic, or just killing off half of my music collection which i would hate to do. Its a lose lose situation.

I'm trying to debate if i should just hold off till February to see if apple comes through, gets serious, and offers a 60+ gb ipod touch.

Well, it would seem more important to have most of your music on there than videos. Considering 90% of video I watch once and then never again. Music, no so much. I wouldn't be surprised to see a doubling of capacity for the iPhone and touch early next year.

Well isn't the iPod you want then is the 120GB iPod classic?
So Apple is being serious by giving 120GB's.

It's not crap. Judge the iPod Touch/iPhone on it's own merits. Of course one day there will probably be 120GB Touch but not today because of economics. What would you say if they Apple came out with a 120 Touch for $800? And how many do you expect them to sell at that price? So wait til April and they should have a 64GB or whittle down your music collection. Don't blame Apple.

I also had that issue, do I buy a classic with more space or a touch that is more versatile. In the end I bought a classic which has served me very well for the last year and a bit. However im going to try and pick up a touch tonight (32gig) mostly for videos, wifi and movies.

The capacity of the touch isnt too bad when you consider what the first gen iPods had to offer! It will get bigger eventually but you may end up waiting a few years for that.

Just wait calmly for the 1.6 TB iPod touch in 2030.

http://gizmodo.com/352839/16tb-ssd-is-largest-flash-drive-yet-you-definitely-cant-afford-it

There will always be new solid state drives with great capacity, but as has been mentioned, it's economics. what does it cost to put that SSD into the iPod touch. A 64GB iPod will come, and one higher, it's just a matter of time. The question is how much time do you want to spend without the features of the touch waiting for capacity to catch up to economics?

A lot of us get caught up on having every ounce of music/videos that we own with us at one period of time. I don't blame someone for this. It's great for car trips and long trips where you may never know what you want during a trip. For instance I'll be gone on a trip for almost a month starting next week. Having my 80GB iPod will rule, but too, I'm also a laptop user... I always have everything with me, so I could sync stuff on and off.

I played around the other day with my music collection to see what kind of smartplaylist system I could come up with.

Rating my complete albums I was alble to par down my library to smartplaylists that contain all my five star albums, then higher rated songs from my 3/4 star albums, and then have a playlist that calls all of my "singles" that have a rating over 3, and then have some random playlists that call and random set of liveupdating music from the remaining songs, mix it up with a few more playlists, have a static playlist to move very specific albums to I must have at a time, and maybe use a playlist that brings in very recent albums.

These groups of playlists I made for fun the other day is only about 12 GB with some random rotation. This leaves me about 2GB for other audio, but of course leaves me nothing for video.... I could easily cut down my singles >3 with is about 3 GB of the music portion and make it more random to free up some space for apps and videos, but I have very little use for video I'm finding, it's novel, but I'm not using it much.

This is based off of an audio library (include podcasts and audiobooks) that is around 30GB in size at anyone time depending on podcast subscriptions and how fast I'm listening to them. I know not much compared to the rest of the music collectors out there.

It takes a little bit of time to come up with a nice system to handle a smaller subset of a music library, but I think I could be really comfortable with a 32GB iPod touch for day to day listening, especially if I kept my 80GB iPod for having an ultimate music listening library in my car.

I guess it comes down to this, if you already have a higher capacity iPod, why not "buy in" here a little early with a 8GB or a 16GB iPod touch for fun? The larger iPod kind of subsidizes the lower capacity iPod, but you get the fun of the other iPod.

But I would say, after all that. We'll hopefully see a 64GB iPod touch before the end of next year. But I would bet money that there is a 60% chance that we will see it at the $499 price point. So take that into account.

But that being said, we have to stop being lazy and use the power of playlists to help us manage smaller iPods. It's really a lot more fun, you kind of discover things you've been missing when you try to make the perfect collection of static smart, static, and random smartlists to get on a 8-32GB iPod.

But my life has me on a tight leash. No iPod touch for me... Maybe if I pass my boards. ;)

Happy iPodding.

Oh, to actually answer the question. If you MUST have more space, wait, it will come, if you decide space really isn't so important after all, get out and buy your iPod. Life is short, enjoy it ;) But only you can really decide this for yourself, because higher capacity WILL come, so if you can't handle missing it by a month or two, wait.

Here's the way I'm looking at it: I would really like a new Touch but could really use a 64gb. I have about 25gb of music on a dying iPod Photo, so my current plan is to buy a 32gb, use it until a 64gb comes out, and then sell it for probably about $50 less than I paid for it.

Keep this in mind: what if a 64gb doesn't come out until next September? Are you willing to wait that long for the Touch? I'm not. So I might as well start enjoying it now, even if it doesn't have quite the space requirements I'd like.

Every iPod ever released is only a stopgap until the next better, cheaper, more powerful, higher capacity iPod to be released after it. So I try not to worry about it, until right around September.

That being said, if you are really dying for a 64GB Touch and are ready to pay $499 for it, maybe Apple will release one early next year (similar to the delayed 32GB 1G Touch release).

Well obviously I'm willing to wait a year or so for one with more space. I don't know how often Apple puts out new/updated products. Trust me, I'm not dying to get one this second. I'm still saving for a Gibson SG electric guitar and a more professional camera, both expensive items. Plus I'm only 16. Lots of time. I was just curious.

Yeah I would wait unless you arent the type to wait for something better............like me :)

I would just not put any vids or movies at all and when I do want to watch I just add it from the comp.
