okay... i admit... im pretty behind the times.
i got my ipod touch in november 2007, and iv had the same firmware of 1.1.1 the whole time.
i've had it jailbroken for quite a long time now, but im getting pretty bored of it. it just seems too cheap to me, to be honest. :p
i was thinking of updating to 2.1 firmware, but i dont think my dad will let me pay for an update!
i really want to get rid of the jailbreak, but i think il probably need to update it as well, so im kinda stuck

Absolutely it's worth it. It's like having an entirely different iPod.

okayy
so its got the app store right? do you have to pay for everything in that as well?!
im like only a teenager, so i'm not really allowed to spend too much on my ipod apparently :P
is the battery life any better? thats another reason why im getting rid of the jailbreak on mine, as i feel like the battery just drains all the time wayyy too quickly!

There are free apps in the app store but I would rather have a jailbroken ipod. Btw, I think 2.1 is going to be jailbroken soon so don't update anything higher than 2.1.

I haven't had a jailbroken iPod, so I can't really speak to that, but the first thing I did with my touch when I got it was upgrade to 2.0. There's a variety of programs available, which I think you can browse in iTunes even if you haven't done the upgrade, so maybe check them out and see if you think it's worth upgrading for. Many are free and many will cost you, so you kind of have to look and see what's there that you'd like to have and whether it's free or not.
So far there's only one program I know that I might consider jailbreaking my iPod for, and that's the one that lets you control your music by tapping the screen without looking at it. There doesn't seem to be any equivalent in the ap store because Apple won't approve applications that mess with the music player functionality. Other than that, there's nothing that I want that I haven't already found in the ap store, but some do cost you.

Well, we can't really take about that on the boards here.
Definitely worth checking out, and for reference, I'd say about 20-25% of the applications in the AppStore are available for free. There are still some applications I'd jailbreak for (e.g., PocketTouch, dTunes & MxTube), but that's dropping by the day...

It's $9.95
If you can afford the iPod, you can afford a $9.95 update. Skip dinner one night or something...
The App store has a myriad of free apps, and you'll add five more Apple applications, along with general stability, bug fixes, etc. It's completely worth it.
Sigh...what's with all these kids wanting everything for free...?

My main complaint is the issue of switching back between music playing and video watching. When you are playing music on a play list and switch to play a video, and back to music you have to restart listening to your music play list again. It doesn't keep where you left off. I hate this feature and apple lame for changing it, what happened to if it isn't broken don't fix it thing, doesn't apply here. I had one crash in the first half hour of being on 2.1. And half the other applications don't matter unless you are always near a wi-fi. It would be better if you had the iphone to have a majority of the applications. Apple should work on separating applications specifically for the touch and for the iphone.

I know Im a little late to respond here.... but. I think that the 2.1 update is very much worth it. I like the fact that I have apps (legit apps) right there at my disposal, and if I need it, a huge variety of paid apps. Just the app store alone made it worth it for me.

I just picked up a 2nd gen Touch on my way home tonight, connected to iTunes and there is a 2.1.1 update out now, not seen any mention of this one yet? All updated fine :)
Oh and regarding 2.1, my 1st gen Touch was running so much faster/smoother I would highly recommend the update.

Hmmm, 2.1.1? I read about this somewhere, but my iTunes 8 hasn't told me about an upgrade.

2.1 is so completely worth it, it's ridiculous. Now... 2.0... that's a different story. Complete and utter disaster was that. 2.1 is fantastic and makes your touch into a completely new device (and one that works great, unlike 2.0). I love the new Genius playlist feature too, more than I was expecting.

What about video fast forward and rewind is that nice and smooth or is it still broken as per version 2.0?
