I have been putting off upgrading for a number of reasons. One of the main reasons is that
I'm not sure if I will retain all the notes and screen shortcuts that I have.
I have 6 screens worth of shortcuts and about 50 pages of notes. There is no way
to back these up normally and I don't want to lose them when I upgrade. Can someone
please tell me if they are saved and rentained during the upgrade. Is there anything special I should be doing before I upgrade? Thanks.

Im not 100% sure but I dont see why you cant just backup your current iPod touch and then you get your new one just tell it restore to that backup. When you backup it does backup your notes but not completely sure about the web clips.

i upgraded my touch's firmware and when i did so, all the webshortcuts i had along with everything else just ported over fine. so i can vouch that its 100% safe.

I only had a few quirks when I upgraded from a 1st gen to a 2nd gen:
1) My Weather Underground webclip lost it's anchor, so it wasn't starting at exactly the right spot on the page. Odd, but not debilitating.
2) A couple of apps didn't initially restore, even though they were in the archive. I just had to click to enable them in iTunes and they came over fine, though.
3) eReader forgot about my authorizations for a bit, and I had to reauthorize a couple of books before the key library was reestablished.
However, all of my notes were maintained just fine.
