Travelling to the US with iPhone 3G

I'll be travelling to the US soon and I really don't want the roaming data charges. Is there a way I can turn off the Edge/3G internet services on the iPhone 3G and still retain both the Cellular AND Wi-fi Functions?

In settings under network you can turn off data roaming! Data only, you will still be charged for telephone use. Wifi will still work.

Oh cool really? That simple eh? I thought the roaming switch would shut off all roaming capabilities. Thanks a bunch.
