I tried to do a voicemail test, leaving about 4 voicemail and when I click on Phone -> Voicemail, it just went ahead and dial it instead of showing "Visual Voicemail" like I see on the TV ads.
Is this feature no longer available in iPhone 3G?

I also have 2.1 just installed. I did a test and no go.
In the Home screen, when you press Phone -> Voicemail, what do you see in the following situation:
1) With NO messages
2) With just 1 message
3) With MORE than 1 message
Mine just dialed straight to my voicemail, nothing "Visual"....

In either of the above cases, I see the Visual Voicemail screen. The contents differ as below:
1) I see only "Deleted Messages."
2) and 3) I see "Deleted Messages" and all the other messages.
I have 2.1 installed.

I found out that there is an issue whereby the Visual Voicemail is not setup correctly from AT&T side: http://forums.wireless.att.com/cng/board/message?board.id=apple&message.id=46608&query.id=364562#M46608
Actually, it turn out AT&T messed up my Corporate Premier order. Not only VIsual Voicemail was not added, the iPhone Data Plan and corporate discount was not added either!

I ran into a semi-similar problem yesterday. I had been using visual voice mail since the day after getting my iphone. Yesterday I tried swapping SIM cards with a friend for a few minutes and my VVM disappeared. I fiddled with it a bit and after a half-dozen attempts, it finally asked for my PIN and upon accepting it I was able to get back into my VVM.
