Hi,
My 20 gig ipod classic seems to have died so I will be purchasing a new ipod.

The itunes on my computer has about 16.55 gig of stuff. If I get a smaller capacity ipod like an 8 gig, can I NOT have all the songs, etc in my itunes on my ipod? I.E. I only need a couple playlists and a book or 2 at any given time. I don't need my Christmas Playlist and books that I have already listened to on my actual ipod.

Also, I have a Jensen docking station at work so I can listen to my ipod. When I initially bought it it had lots of different adapters depending on which ipod you were using with it. Do those adapters change or would a NANO adapter work regardless of the "Generation". What about an ipod touch? That was not available when I got the docking station. Would a new adapter need to be purchased separately?

I apologize if these are stupid questions!

It is very easy to have an iTunes library larger than the capacity of your iPod. Being that the iPod Touch only goes up to 32 GB, and the iPhone and Nano only go to 16 GB, that is the case for most iPod users, especially the ones on the Touch forum. You can sync to one, several, or one group of playlists in iTunes to keep the music you're syncing down to the capacity of your iPod. Or you can let iTunes fill your iPod for you more or less randomly, or you can "manually manage music" and drag tracks individually or in groups to your iPod. Lots of options. I think more space is always better, and if you were considering an iPod Touch, I'd just go with the 32 GB model and skirt this issue, but there are many options if you choose to go with a lower-capacity model.

If what you mean by "adapter" is "dock insert." than any iPod you buy should come with a dock insert for that iPod. And there are probably ways to get extras as well. To figure out if there are any compatibility issues between your products and your new iPod, you might check the manufacturer's site and check the accessory forums to see if anyone else is using the same combination. It seems to be hit or miss what does and does not work with the Touch/iPhone.

It may help you out to check the manufactuer's website and see if they will offer the inserts and if you can't find anything there should be a way to shoot them an e-mail and ask if they plan to.
