Just clicked the Check for Update button, and it said that 2.1 is now ready. I'm downloading as I type this.

This update went WAY faster than the previous 2.x updates. It's already done. I had a strange message at the very end about this iPhone couldn't be activated, etc - is your SIM inserted and unlocked. However, I pulled the iPhone out of the dock and put it back in, and it's updated and activated just fine.
Now off to test the new features.

I'm updated.... no probs... did not get any messages when completed... contacts come up very fast now...
Let hope it fixed everything.

Here are the updates I've noticed so far:
- As Rick said, Contacts work great now, just like they did before 2.0.
- I installed an app (actually an update), and it went WAY faster than before. Essentially, as soon as it got past the loading part, it moved to the correct location and was done.
- The Edge icon lost the square around the E.
- The Genius playlist thing works very well. There is a Genius item on the playlist tab, or when a song is playing, if you tap the screen once, a Genius icon shows up under the scrubber. You can create a playlist, refresh it with new songs, or save it. And, after you save it, you can still refresh it if you want. Saved Genius playlists show up with the Genius icon to the right in your Playlist list.
- When scrolling through songs, the song title shows up in bold, and the artist and album show up in a small text underneath. Very cool.
Edit: OK, best news yet. First backup after installing the update, and this is AFTER installing an app update, took about 20 seconds. Before, it was around 15 minutes for a backup for me, plus or minus.

I live in an area where ive had 0-1 or 2 bars 3G, typically i would dial a call it would immediately fail or drop, to sum it up 3g service was useless, i was switched to edge full time.
after this update, im getting FULL 5 bars 3G service in the house, the data actually works on safari. im very impressed, i really had my doubts how a software update could fix a signal issue. but they managed to do it!

I had to turn 3G off prior to this update because the signal was so weak. Now my 3G is constantly showing between 3 and 5 bars. Hopefully this will continue but I have no reason to believe it won't.
Also, accessing contacts is MUCH faster!
For now I'm a happy camper!

Does 2.1 support the headphone button triple-click, previous song feature that the new iPod nano has?

This is much, much better.
3G reception does seem to be genuinely improved.
Backups no longer take a RIDICULOUS amount of time.
I can install all the applications I want without it turning its toes up. And I can update them from the phone.
Jury's still out on battery life. Time will tell!
I'm off to purchase Spore Origins now :)

Does 2.1 support the headphone button triple-click, previous song feature that the new iPod nano has?
Yes, it does. I just checked with my Sennheiser headphones. :)
What I've noticed so far:
Backup is much faster.
Contact lag is pretty much gone.
Japanese language input is LIGHT YEARS faster.
Genius playlists work very well.
I finally consider this to be the release of OS X 2 for iPhone. Previous versions (2.0.x) have been Beta. :)

Excellent! I'm also hoping it fixes the lag in swiping e-mail messages to delete them. I don't know how many times I've tried to swipe two in a row, only to have the second one lag enough that the swipe was interpreted as a tap.

Well, after I downloaded the update and tried to install it I got an error. I X'd out iTunes and am trying again *crosses fingers*

Same here! I used to get 1 bar 3G or No Service in my house. After the update I was getting 2 and 3 bars. Not the best, but I'll take it! I'm just happy to be able to use my iPhone in my house now!

Got it to update, but backup is actually slower for me...
also the App Store has a badge to update an app that says "Installed" (which I cannot 'updated' because it already exists on my phone) and doesn't go away.

Everything seems to run better now...
but I've noticed that the 3G and the E at the top left have lost the little box around them. Has this happened to anyone else?

Goodness knows. Maybe they wanted to place a clear sign that tells the world whether or not you have updated to 2.1?

finally, a worthy update :)
Now my contacts list load so much faster and no more SMS lag (so far). 3rd party apps install so much faster too. I'm very pleased. Now I can say I'm truly satisfied with the iPhone.
Edit: I also noticed that the update has made the screen a little dimmer/warmer color tone? Could this have something to do with the increased battery life Apple promised along with the update? I've placed my iPhone beside my ipod touch and there's a very obvious difference in color tone

iPhone 3G has a yellowish tint while the original iPhone and iPod touch had a bluish tint. It's nothing in the update, it's just how they were from the start. Apple said that they said the yellowish tint makes everything look crisper.

I have noticed since the update I cannot access iTunes from my phone, says cannot connect iTunes, connect tons wifi and try again.
My 3g is a full 5 bars, is there something I'm missing with iTunes setting?

Great, GREAT update. Especially battery life wise! The battery is just so much better, I cannot stress that enough. Wow, what a real improvement. In addition, my backup has become a lot quicker from my previous post.
I was playing music for about half of this and had Wi-Fi for half, with overly-average use (basically Twittering):

BUT WHYYYY!!!!
It's possible that the white lettering on a blue background was hard for some people to read. I didn't have any problems with those icons, but I do have problems reading some fast food restaurant menu boards if they have the same color scheme, so I can empathize with those people.

They added artist and album information to the song names in playlists! I've been peeved that it didn't have this since the first iPhone was released. Very nice feature "upgrade" even though the Classic has had this for nearly two years now.

You need Wi-Fi to download from the iTunes Store. You can not use 3G to do it.
