I do not have an iPhone, but I am wondering how the speakers are. ( on the 3G ) I've heard that they are tons better than the first gen.

I know that the new iPod Touch has them now too, so what I am wondering is if it's like a small radio for listening to music. For instance, could I have this is a room listening to the iPod ( without the ear buds of course ) and hear it well?

I was just wondering if I should buy this ( the iPod Touch ) for my Dad. He does not like ear buds, and it would be nice if he could have this plugged into the wall and listen to music at the same time without the buds...

Maybe they're way too weak for that... If anyone could give me insight, that'd be much appreciated! :)

I personally don't consider the internal speaker of the iPhone (and presumably of the new iPod touch) to be adequate for music. It is good enough for enjoying games with sound and hearing your wife shouting at you on the other end of the line, but not for much more.

You'd want to consider buying a small speaker system that you can plug your iPhone in for your father.

As Steave Jobs put it, it's not meant to be audiophile or even hifi, but it does give you sound.there is only so much you can do with very tiny speakers, and it does well for what it is.

okay - I hoped it would be good enough for him, but like you guys said, with those small speakers, there's only so much power.

Thanks for your kind replies. :)

True, but in general any tiny speaker(s) can only do so much.

The speakerphone is just fine, and I often listen to my podcasts over it as well when I take my toddler to the park.

If you WANT a GOOD external speaker, try this: http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/speakers/9e68/

It's a small speaker but sound really good. If you Google it, people are raving about it. I bought one and just loving it. I use it when I am travelings and listen in the hotel while doing work. (i.e. because I can't do multiple PC sync between my home and work laptops)
