Never thought to ask that question till after I started to bring it with me during jogging sessions. I think it's a flash drive but can someone confirm?

Yes. The iPhone has a flash drive (along with the Touch, the Nano, and the Shuffle). Only the Classic has a hard drive.

This explains the low capacity

This explains the low capacity
... and the compactness of those devices. :)

I am hoping Apple will announce the higher-capacity iPod touch at their "Rock" event next Tuesday.

Why bother... From what I understood it can't be used as a remote hard drive anymore :(

With the right app it can be.

I could if I wanted to. For some reason my Linux desktop recognizes my iPhone as a hard drive. :)

You mean an app on the iPhone?

In some respects it's better. It can not only behave like a hard drive, but also behave like a wireless networked drive. Not necessarily that useful, I admit, but still kinda cool. :)

I for one am glad it is flash based. sure 16 or even 32GB might be low in space, but 16GB does very well, but I would always welcome more space as long it's not on a HDD.

It certainly has benefits. Less power-drain, less bulk, improved reliabilty....
