From the lock screen, I slide to unlock to get the "Enter Passcode" screen. If I hit the emergency call button, I can dial literally any number and be connected.

Surely this should be restricting to emergency numbers like 112, 999, 911 etc?

I am on O2, with a iPhone 3G v2.02 firmware - not jailbroken.

Best wishes

What's the point of 'restricting' anyone who wants to make an emergency call?
In case of emergency, you should be able to call ANYBODY you want (not just 911, etc).
Glad that the developers took the time to 'think out of the box'!

I take it from your response that this is as designed and isn't an issue with my particular sim card, iphone, setting whatever.

But what you're also saying is that you think it is perfectly acceptable for someone who picks up my phone to be able to call anyone in the world?

Define what "Emergency" means? Does it only mean 911, 999 etc or does it mean whatever I may think is an emergency where I need to make a call now? It's subjective at best, but I see your point.

I was just going by what I am used to on Sony Ericsson or Nokia phones where if the keypad is locked you can still make calls to emergency numbers as defined in the SIM card. These are usually 112, 911, 999, 08 - usually deactivating the phone's lock gives full access without a pin, though.

With the iPhone the phone is actually locked further with the passcode access requirement (because I am connected to Exchange) - however, since the phone is locked I don't really expect that anyone else should be able to call whoever they want.

It's not too big a deal, and I'm reassured that everyone's phone does this - I was just caught off guard because I found the implementation surprising!

To be honest the passcode is hardly a safe guard. All a thief needs to do is plug into iTunes and it will remove the lock anyway. It may act as a slight deterrent, but I very much doubt it. The best way is to notify O2 immediately so they can lock the SIM and prevent calls being made altogether. Plus you have Exchange so you can remotely wipe all your stuff as well, so you are pretty safe if you are quick.

It is quite surprising though, I do agree that only emergency numbers (999 etc.) should be dial-able when you select emergency numbers. I think most people can agree what can be defined as an emergency number.

Personally, I think this is a glitch. When the phone is locked, only EMERGENCY calls should be possible, not any calls. And when you plug into iTunes, you have to put the passcode in to get the phone to synch as well.
