Hi. I like going through the forums here to view pictures of people's iPod car installations to figure out what looks the best in planning my in-car installation. I thought i'd pitch an idea which i think would be helpful, rather than having a separate thread for each person who decides to post pictures of their installs, why dont we make one dedicated thread as like a gallery of car installs so i, as well as im sure many others, can browse through what people have done for inspiration. Im posting this so that a mod can make said thread provided enough people think it's a good idea i suppose.

Sure. I'm still really excited about my install, so I'll use any excuse to post a picture of it. :D
Here it is:

Having a thread with lots of pics of installs is a really good idea. If it's going to be this thread I'd suggest we change the title. "Car Installations" in the forum called "iPod-In-Car Solutions" isn't too helpful.

#### Dbett,
Awesome awesome!!! do you have the DC tapped into the cigarette lighter line, or is it connected right to the car battery?

It's connected though a Belkin auto adapter which is plugged into an extra cigarette lighter jack hidden behind the dash. I wired that extra jack off of the main cigarette lighter power lines (I ran that tap through a DC noise filter first).

hey rrad,
just curious, what adapter did you use for your truck? I have 2003 silverado and the site that sells aux adapters says it only works on radios that are xm equipped? is this true?
your install looks great, that's exactly what i want.

Do you use a tape adapter rrrad?

Tape adapter?!?! That's a CD player installed in his dash!
Besides, his charger (SiK Imp) -or any other charger with line out- does not play well with tape adapters.
He most likely have an AUX input. If not, then a wired FM modulator.

I used a P.I.E. GM9-Aux adapter, but I kind of cheated. It was not compatible with my stock head unit, only 2000 - 2002 units, so I found a cheap, somewhat beat up model on eBay and switched out the buttons and stuff that was broken on it and swapped it into my truck. The GM9-Aux works excellent! I hid an auxiliary cigarette lighter adapter behind the a/c controls and used the SiK for power and line out. The black stuff around the wires is a spiral wire wrap that Radio Shack sells.
Malcanta - The GM9-Aux will not work for you - only for 2000 - 2002 models. I am not sure if there is a solution yet, but there may be one in the future. There are several companies jumping on the bandwagon, just search around until you figure it out. Good luck!
Thanks for looking at my pics!

No steering wheel controls :( When I bought the dealer had lots regular cabs which is what I wanted and the "loaded" ones were all outfitted the same which is what I got. I went back for service 6 mo later and the regular cabs had steering wheel radio control, bigger v8's, better differentials, xm ready radios, and blinkers on the side mirrors! guess they took a page from apple huh?
I think the stock stereo is pretty good (regular cab experience), it has something like 6 speakers which isn't bad given the space. eventually i would like to add a sub (maybe bazooka?) because the bass is the one thing it's missing.

Had to use a ground-loop isolator to eliminate electrical noise caused by the iPod's sensitive electronics. Cannot use FireWire feature for power as there is excessive noise travelling through the FireWire connection. Still trying to troubleshoot that one. But the sound is crystal clear and it is so convenient to control my iPod with my steering wheel controls.

New install, wired remote is on a small bracket and offers quick easy access to controls without taking my eyes off the road.
I will eventually hide the wires by running them into the center console instead of down the side. I'm making sure I like the mount before I make a hole.
As you can see I've reinstalled the original head unit after purchasing the RCA/CD changer connector for my Dodge radio. The sound is great. I'm also using the Belkin Tunedok and that allows for quick removal whenever I park my car. A quick look inside will hopefully deter any woould-be thieves.

That's pretty sweet. That's kinda what I wanted to do with mine before I realized that the angle of my ashtray (which tilts out instead of sliding out like yours), means that the iPod won't fit.

Just a quick description of my setup. Awful, fuzzy pics included:
1) RCA adapter (from rcainput.com) in trunk
2) monster mp3 cable from rca adapter up through lighter/ashtray area in console
3) the cable plugs into the back of an Apple iPod dock
4) plugged a 2 port outlet adapter into the lighter
5) plugged the belkin iPod adapter into one port and then plugged the dock connector into the back of the dock
6) modified the other lighter outlet to fit back into the factory outlet spot
7) cut down the sides of the dock to fit snuggly in the space where the ashtray was
8) put everything back together
Basically, after all this was done, what I have is a setup where everything is hidden by sliding the ashtray cover closed. All I have to do is plug my iPod into the dock which both connects it to the audio system and charges it via the Belkin adapter. I really wanted to have as clean an install as possible and I've found this to work perfectly.

rrrad,
Did you use a car phone mount to mount your iPod. If not, what is it?
rrrad
04-20-2004, 07:57 PM
It is an Arkon mount. It works fine, but is barely wide enough to fit the iPod with the Speck skin on it. I have successfully torn the foam on either side - however you can't see it when the iPod is mounted. It holds it plenty tight, too!
I think Arkon calls it a "ratcheting" mount, because you can twist it into almost any position.
Thanks,
Reed

ok this is my first post here, but I'm very envious of all of the people with their iPods installed in their cars. I have a factory installed CD player in my car and I am dying to get my iPod hooked up to my player. I purchased the iTrip, but the sound just isn't good enough for me. Can anyone help me figure out what I need to get/do for this to work?? Thanx ahead of time...

Ok, so I'm pretty much so excited I can't stand it.
I finally got a car after 20 years of torture, and I'm ready to mate my 15GB iPod to it. I just thought I'd tell people exactly what I was doing in case someone else decides to do something similar.
I just ordered the wonderful and amazing PIE X3 Auxiliary Input Selector with the accompanying cable for my car (2000 Accord Coupe). It lets me attach any auxiliary audio input (up to 3) in addition to my 6 CD changer that's right below my radio in the center of the dash. I ordered it from myradiostore.com (http://store.myradiostore.com/piex3auxinad.html) for 97 bucks (that includes shipping and the vehicle-specific cable needed to hook up to my car's stereo). The same thing was availiable at logjam electronics for $117. Unlike the comparable soundgate model that was more expensive, the PIE X3 comes with a mini display that can be attached anywhere in the car, and allows you to switch between any of the compenents and the CD changer.
I also ordered the SiK imp, which i will use to both charge the iPod and provide a line out to connect to the PIE X3. I'm going to buy this 12VDC Car Power Adapter Outlet (http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&product%5Fid=270-1556) from radioshack, and tap into my existing power adapter outlet's lines, so that I don't take up an outlet, plus everything can be out of sight.
I must admit I stole most of my ideas from this dude Jeff (spacemansp1ff@yahoo.com), who created this wonderfully descriptive guide (http://www2.et.byu.edu:8080/~jtb8/iPod/ipod_install.html) on how to set up an iPod in a 1999 Accord. I'm varying from his methods only slightly, since I'll have the wired remote display from the PIE X3 to deal with, plus I am going to have the cord come through the cup holder, since I'm going to use the Arkon iPod Cupholder Stand (http://www.semsons.com/semsons-inc/aripmobphonc.html) (or the Belkin TuneDok, I havent decided, it depends on which one holds it at a better height). Check out Jeff's page, he did a badass job...and for my sake, I hope it works.
The essentials (PIE X3, SiK imp) will be arriving within the next few days, and once I get them, I'll head over to the ratshack to get the other knicknacks (I already have a 3.5mm stereo plug to RCA cord). Wish me luck, as this is going to be a pretty big project, and I have pretty much 0 experience in taking apart my car. I'll post pictures of the install once I'm done. And for those wondering final cost of the whole thing, right now it looks to be around $157. If I didn't want to keep the CD changer, it would be a lot cheaper, like around $100. Wish me luck, I'm going to need it. Any suggestions or comments are welcome. Thanks
-Matt

Thanx so much for that link! I appreciate it. What sucks is that I know absolutely nothing about cars or their stereos. I think a guy at work will try to help me out. and I would definitely rather buy that Auxiliary Input rather then a new CD player for my car. Although a new CD player does sound cool, i won't need it if i get my iPod hooked up...wow I'm so excited.
Where could I possibly go to get that input? Just a car stereo place, or would Radio Shack possibly have it? I wonder....I don't want to order online, due to the fact that I'm impatient and I want to get it now!
Torgo
04-29-2004, 01:58 PM
Unfortunately, I've never seen any of the input adapters available in stores, so I think you will have to order it online. Again, I would make sure that your stereo is compatible first (either by calling the adapter company or checking the back of the stereo yourself) so that you don't end up wasting your money.
As far as being impatient goes, I can definitely relate. Three simple words?Next Day Air.

While I'm sure Torgo used that link just to give you an idea of what you need, I would suggest shopping around a bit, backstageV-cardholder...the company that makes the adapter Torgo showed you, P.I.E., has two authorized retailers...myradiostore.com (http://www.myradiostore.com) and Logjam Electronics (http://www.logjamelectronics.com). Just look for auxiliary input converters for a GM factory radio. They all have application guides, which detail which cars with which radios are compatible, so definitely check first. However, if you do screw up, i know myradiostore.com has a 21 day return policy. Plus, I used regular shipping, and I got my X3 the next day! for 6 bucks. Anyways, happy hunting, and if you're going to go the hardwire route, just realize you're going to have to take apart your car a bit and put it back together.

There are some pretty slick installations here, but IMO, the best installation is not one that's all showy and puts the iPod on display as the center of attention on your dash. I mean, first of all, the iPod's controls are fairly difficult to operate while driving and unless the screen is right up near the roadway (basically, you holding it up in the air), it's a great distraction when driving. I know because I've been using mine like this for about a year along with a cassette adapter.
I think the best solution is like what Alpine has done with their new KCA-420i iPod Controller Unit, which lets you put the iPod out of sight (and out of sight of potential thieves too!) and control the iPod through your stereo. Still lets you search songs, playlists, albums, etc., but you get to do all this through your stereo (and can use the Alpine stereo remote to do this as well). Much safer, less wiring, higher quality, and less chance of theft, IMO. Might want to look into it.

im not quite sure i agree with you on this one. i have my ipod mounted on top of my dash (rather, a holder mounted, which i put the ipod into) and its much easier to look at that and control it than it would be to reach (and look!) further down away from the road to the headunit.
and to go against your argument for having the ipod in the air, do you control your headunit from a spot at eye level? also, unless you have a 400+ dollar alpine headunit, its only going to display a line or two of text at a time. tell me you can scroll through your head unit quicker and easier without taking your eyes off hte road just as much as you would if you had the ipod-which would scroll faster and display more at the same time anyway!
and honestly, whats complicated about using 3 buttons (menu, scrool wheel, and select) as compared to using a slow volume knob and three buttons on your stereo which arent even properly labeled to correspond with the ipod? im sure its something like "preset button 1 is playlist, 2 artist, 3 genre etc. etc.
and keeping hte ipod out of site to potential theives, i dont really know anyone with an ipod who would keep their it in their car all the time.
i really only see the alpine controller being for people who a) already have a compatible alpine headunit, b) have lots of money to spend if they dont, or c) prefer a "clean" install (which isnt hard to obtain without the fancy controller stuff)
overall, i believe the best way to control an ipod is the ipod itself, whether it be in a car or not. you can get the exact same sound quality for far less (so far ive only spent 40 dollars, another 30 for the sik imp soon)

Fair enough there, but if you'll look, most people on here are "mounting" their iPods VERY low like around the cigarette lighter area or even down in the console area. Your "heads-up display" type approach is the best method if you insist upon using the iPod's controls, in my opinion. At least that way your eyes just have to dart a short distance between the road and the small iPod text display.

Well, it's close to eye level I guess, but honestly when driving, I prefer to use the IR remote control, which works with the KCA-420i. That's the safest method IMO.

Well, I personally have the Alpine CDA-9835 with the BioLite display, but ALL the Alpine head units display text larger and clearer than the iPod. I'm sorry, but the text on the iPod is VERY small when driving and focusing on large objects like trees and other cars. Switching between objects like that and 11 pt. Geneva font isn't intuitive in any sense of the word.

Again, the display on the iPod is quite a bit smaller than the head unit display and the text size is MUCH smaller on the iPod than on car stereo head units.

I'm not saying it's complicated--the iPod's controls are elegantly intuitive. HOWEVER, the touch feel buttons on the iPod are EXTREMELY sensitive and when bumping up and down on the highway at 70+ MPH, one "click" of a button tends to do more. Same goes for trying to get to a particular listing with the scroll wheel. You gotta look, scroll, look, oops you scrolled too far, scroll back, look, oops too far back, scroll forward carefully, look, OK there you got it. I mean, gimme a break...that's too much to do when driving a 1,000+ lb. piece of machinery.

It doesn't take a bunch of times, but just one time for a thief to take off with your beloved iPod and music collection. Unless you enjoy a rather extensive "tear down procedure" every time you turn your car off, get out, and leave it parked, having the iPod out of site (but still usable) like the KCA-420i allows you to do is optimal as far as loss prevention goes.

good reply 007. i think a lot of people are hating now that they put a lot of time and effort into these "clean installs" (which are still great btw). the interface keeps the ipod out of sight and out of mind, locked in the glove compartment. there are definately some beautiful installs out there but you just can't beat "built in." say what you like but the interface is THE BEST way to go. justify other installs all you like.

I have a friend with the interface. He prefers to use the ipod controls over the interface, and is probally gonna sell the interface on ebay.
My "tear-down" procedure consists of unplugging the ipod and sticking it in my pocket. Takes all of 2 seconds tops. I already have to unclip my cell from the visor, so I use one hand to unclip the cell, and the other to put the ipod in pocket. I'm out in less than 4 seconds.

Well then he must be a Communist!
:D ;) :p Just kidding. To each his own really, but I think that MOST people prefer to keep both eyes on the road and manipulate large knob and push button controls instead of small touch [hyper-]sensitive controls. I know that I would prefer that other drivers do the former rather than the latter. :(

I see. Well, I already carry enough things in my pockets (you wouldn't imagine...) and don't care to add a 40 GB iPod to the list. Esp. since I wouldn't be listening to it from my pocket. For me, it's something that I prefer to leave in the car. ...just not something that I prefer to leave in plain view in the car and have stolen. :(

Well, I'm also in a small town, and when I'm not parking at wal-mart or the mall, I just leave my iPod sitting in the cupholder, althought if I'm anywhere but home or a friends house, I'll slide the cover onto it, so it's not quite SO obvious.....

The older Golfs (and Jettas) had these little buttons that you could pop on and off. I used those to attach a Belkin holder for the clip/holster. I used the Belkin auto dock connector with line out connected to an AUX in on my Blaupunkt receiver. All the wires are behind the dash. Hopefully the pics will post -

Nice install jsmithsole, Heres a couple of pics of my install in my 95 Mitsubishi Shogun (Montero is the US i think?)
I have a little cubby hole under my stereo so i thought it was ideal for my ipod to have a little home there:p
I has a 12v socket underneath the stereo as so i wired a new cigarette lighter behind the dash and brought a SiK Imp because it has a line out with the charger. I have a Alpine head unit so it was easy to buy a cable (??15) that plugged into the CD changer port on the head unit and went into the line out on the SiK.
Now the technical Bit;) I cut a hole in the back of the cubby hole and fed the dock connecter through the back. I stuck a little bit of plastic on the front of the cubby door to stop the door opening fully and my ipod just sits securely behind the clip. I added a bit of brushed alu for the base. No Cables are visible and when i leave the car i just put my pod in the cubby and shut the door and no one even knows i have a ??220 ipod in my car!
I'am so chuffed with it and the quality through the line in is amazing.

Heres a little mod we did to make an Ipod holder in my car. I have a 2001 Toyota Sequoia and I took out the 2 cupholders that pulled out from the dash and made a little base floor for the Ipod dock. Check out the pics. (http://www.tundrasolutions.com/photopost/showgallery.php/cat/6351) The dock retracts perfectly into the dash. For the first time job like this, its not bad overall, maybe next time we will make something as clean and custom fabrication as the others.

What a cool place to check out all the Ipod installs. This is a picture of my LG phone and Ipod MIni mounted in my Ford Exporer. Its basically a cheap universal flex cell phone mount bought at Walmart. Taking a piece of custom cut 1/4" flat plastic painted and glued to one end. My ipod cradle holds the ipod in the perfect position and the phone cradle does the same. Whats nice about this set up is I can swap out my ipod for a PDA or Satelite radio in the future. The flat surface has some Scotch reclosable fasteners (velcro patches) to hold just about any portable device in place. I call it the "Podzilla Pad" (patent pending...LOL) Itrip on top plays tunes thru the stereo perfectly.

that would be really nuts if that cell phone is using ac
car battery = DC power
converted from cigarette lighter

converted in cellphone power cable
cell phone = DC power
too bad you can't really hard-wire the cellphone directly to the car battery. youre losing alot of power efficiency in that DC/AC/DC conversion

The OEM LG phone cradle is power directly with 12 vdc with a radio shack cigarette lighter and plug that goes right into the back of the OEM cradle. If you check the AC charger of the OEM cradle it has a 12 vdc output which is what gave me the idea. Yes that is an Itrip on top which will do for now until I figure out if my stock radio has a CD auxiliary input for direct line. can't do it all at one time.

I understand the setup of most of these car ipod intergrations but some seem like the wires are going into the dashboard... where are these going. I think that they are going in high and coming out low near the cigerette lighter but i am not quite sure...and then the other line wire, is there a simple way to directly connect that to the radio or is it always wicked confussing?
Thanks

its not confusing at all. i would assume the wires going into the dash that you notice are wires connecting the ipod to the head unit. the wire by the cigarette lighter is for power

Anybody has tried to put the ipod on the steering wheel??? I done it and works well. I have an Alpine D300 compatible with the KCA-420i but i only use a Belkin Auto kit and the clip of mi iPod mini. Works real fine, i connected to the aux input and always have my two hands on the wheel. Just have to move my finger to the ipod a couple of inches and done!!!!

The airbag can be a problem, but i think that you can use your imagination. I will post some images of what i do on monday and you can create your own solution. I think i will have some trouble. Next week iarrives my new 20 Gb 4th generation iPod and without clip and i don??t know how to put it on the steering wheel.... I think the solution can be very easy creating a strap that can hold the ipod right on. Maybe velcro or something like that.... What do you think?

This is a pic of my simple installation on the steering wheel. Check that i don´t have airbag but i think that with a little bit of imagination you can manage the airbag. The cable works perfect and you can turn it to the top and don´t allow the iPod to move. I´m planning to install a secondary lighter closer to the wheel with a noise reductor in order to hide the connection of the RCA cable in the belkin auto kit and reduce electrical noise (remember that all the lighters have a lot of noise caused by the electrical system of your car). As i said before, with the iPod on this position, i only have to move one finger less than two inches in order to manage my music, i don´t have to loose the control of my car never and if i want to find some music, i just have to move my eyes the same distance than the one i have to move to see my speedometer.

"It's connected though a Belkin auto adapter which is plugged into an extra cigarette lighter jack hidden behind the dash. I wired that extra jack off of the main cigarette lighter power lines (I ran that tap through a DC noise filter first)."
I'm having issues hearing engine noise (whirrrr) while playing my IPOD... (installed similar to yours) I'd like to know what type of DC noise filter you used, and how where it is installed into the system.

I recently updated my BMW X3 iPod mounting/installation. I added a power outlet (part from Radio Shack) in the glovebox and tapped into the fuse box above directly. I choose a blank fuse slot in the upper-LEFT bank. This upper-left bank is accessory-switched power (key in first position), so now the iPod only (usefully) gets power when the radio is also powered. When the key is removed, the iPod will sense no more power coming from the charger, and after pausing play, will shut off automatically. (FYI: the upper-RIGHT bank of fuses are switched when the key is ON, or in the second position - good for tapping a radar dectector. All the fuses on the BOTTOM are constantly powered.)
By moving the power source into the glovebox, the Belkin charger and the aux connections are now hidden inside the glovebox. Only one cable snakes out to be connected to the iPod. I also get to cover the ashtray again and regain the center cigarette lighter outlet for other use.
http://homepage.mac.com/pwan/.Pictures/X3IPOD/IPOD3770pv.jpg
UPDATED IPOD GALLERY HERE (http://homepage.mac.com/pwan/X3/PhotoAlbum17.html)
I was experiencing motor static on my Landcruiser, so I opted in installing a noise (loop) suppressor. Problem was that now the input coming from the IPOD sounded like crap. Almost like if you were playing an old cassette tape. I uninstalled it and the signal was crisp again. I notice I only hear the motor static if I have the stereo real loud on a more quiet playing IPOD song, so I will deal with it for now.
One question regarding the fuse install of the power line... I did somethign similar, but my IPOD will not shut off by itself. Seems like it goes into battery mode when the power is shut off, and it just stays on. Any trick in getting it to turn off here?
THANKS!

I had the Alpine CDA-9833 installed with the KCA-420i two weeks ago and I can say I'm impressed and happy with it.
The installer brought the connecting cable into the ashtray in my 2001 Dodge RAM PU which is right next to the steering wheel. Easy to connect and disconnect the iPod. If you look closely, you can see the single cable connector on the right side of the iPod in the picture linked below. The iPod (in its black Contour brand case with the belt clip attached) can ride very safely connected and perched horizontally on the open ash tray or connected and hidden inside the closed ashtray (in the Contour case with the belt clip detached). Very nice and handy location/clean install.
Here's a picture I just took of my 9833 and the connected IPod. I'm really liking the setup. Great sound, much much better than the cassette adapter or itrip I used previously! Driving is so much more fun now!

th first shuffle install that i've seen! i wonder if many people will opt for installing their shuffles in their cars with more effort than yours. i guess it's a question of whether or not you'd like to have a bout 10 CDs in your car, or a shuffle.
with the regular iPod, it's definitely worth the effort to save one's self from lugging around 200 CDs in their car
nice job, Jonnny! :)

I just installed the Neo iOn with mini in my truck. It works great! I wanted to install the apple mini dock connector in the ash tray, beacuse I thought it would make a good dock for the mini. I was under the impression that the dock was a pass-through device, but the sound does not come through the dock, only a high pitched noise, but it will charge...the mini's sound only works without the dock.
I see some very cool pictures with docks for the mini and ipod..why won't my dock work and is there a dock that will work with the Neo iOn?
Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks.

Tiffeny,
If your head unit has the auxiliary input, you don't need the FM transmitter. The aux input is the best quality you can get. I have the stock stereo on my cavalier, but I'm using an FM Modulator (which is like an in between the fm transmitter and direct input). See pics on my signature of my setup.

this is for the guy with the pioneer head unit. You have to buy an aux adaptor that plugs into where the cd-changer would go. Also coming from pioneer if you have a ipod with a dock connector is something like that alpine adaptor if you have a deck with ip-system bus control on your deck.

Ok, so I just got a 2004 Chevy Trailblazer LT last night. Love it so far. It's a beast. I want to get my 4G 40 hooked up but I'm not sure where to start. I was looking for cables to work with the stock, but I'm having a hard time finding one to work with my stock stereo. It has a AUX button, but no XM or CD changer. I'm also a little worried about pulling out the stereo considering it's a brand new freaking car. Any ideas? I really don't want to just do the Itrip because I can't figure anything else out!

Here's my install. First, the Alpine CDA-9851 in place of the factory head unit with the necessary dual-to-single DIN bracket; the switch and audio connections visible beneath the head unit go to an FM modulator (left over from my previous iPod audio upgrade):
http://home.comcast.net/~somers.a_and_d/CarStereo/IMG_0288.jpg
The AiNet cable goes under the console that runs between the front seats and exits at floor level next to the passenger side seat. The KCA-420i iPod interface resides under the seat, held in place by Velcro (please forgive the trash that's also visible :)):
http://home.comcast.net/~somers.a_and_d/CarStereo/IMG_0291.jpg
The iPod cable coming out of the KCA-420i enters the center console at floor level next to the passenger side seat and emerges inside the armrest compartment through a hole I made with a Dremel tool. The tissue holder in the armrest lid makes a perfect location for mounting the iPod: two denim-covered foam pads constrain the iPod side-to-side and the iPod SportSuit's belt knob engages the tissue holder tension clip to keep it from sliding out the open end of the tissue holder when the lid is closed. The cable is held in the side channel between the tissue holder and edge of the lid by Velcro cable wraps on the cable and a self-adhesive strip of Velcro hooks affixed to the lid inside the channel:

Yeah, it took me awhile to figure out the best location. I was originally thinking of using the ashtray until I realized that my vehicle (2003 Mazda Tribute) doesn't have one. I didn't like the idea of using the glove compartment because the iPod would obstruct access to the contents and I didn't really like the armrest at first for the same reason, until I figured out the tissue holder mounting approach.
Once I settled on the armrest compartment, I was originally intending to run the cable outside and up the back of the center console and under the "lip" of the armrest lid to avoid any permanent modifications to the vehicle interior, but decided that it would potentially interfere with the backseat passengers' fold-out cup holders and would be too ugly. The factory-installed piece of loose carpet in the bottom of the compartment covers the 1/2-inch-square hole (big enough for the connector on the KCA-420i end of the iPod cable to pass through) quite nicely, allowing the cable to sneak out along the edge.
Needless to say, I'm quite pleased the way it turned out -- and quite surprised, considering my general lack of mechanical inclination.

I have a Kenwood headunit with a rear aux port. I purchased the Kenwood Aux/cd changer connection on eBay for like $10 USD. This allows for an RCA(stereo) connection to the headunit. I then purchased a Sik IMP for a split connection to power and line out. I purchased a Monster cable 1/8 to RCA, real thick and heavyily covered, then plugged that in to the Sik IMP line out port. With the Sik IMP, they provide a car charger, everything one needs to charge the iPod. I broke apart the plastic housing that plugs into conventional cigarette lighters. I also made a custom power box that all is need a a direct 12v power source, the cig lighter is good for this, simply slice into the cig light wire after box is complete and you've got power. This work out nice for hiding wires.

The dock is held to the dashboard by a my own homemade sheet metal dock.

An auxiliary cable goes from the line out to my top-secret-in-glove-box cd player. I've also got the xtrememac car charger plugged in to the dock, so it charges as I go.
Not much of a set up compared to the other ones, but it serves me well. Nothing like when the stereo costs more than the car.

Exactly! My first car had a sound system in it worth about twice as much as the car itself. It's all about priorities. :-)

Here is my install in my 2002 Buick Rendevous. 4 component insatll:
1) Proclip Vehicle specif mount (not on the vent I hate that)
2) Proclip swivel mount (you can get them cheaper but the holes line up perfectly, worth the extra $5)
3) Freeway PDA holder (comes with the holder itself and the mount that it clips to.
4) Monster icharger
The mount system cost me about $65 but study as heck and pretty clean if I do say so myself.

Here is how I have my car mounted in my Mazda Protege 2002 car (though it will work in 99.9 % of cars)

The model of the mount was an Arkon CM625 Universal PDA 15" Flexible Gooseneck Mount.
You can get the complete details on my setup here:
http://bodhanwala.blogspot.com/2004/07/i-shall-call-him-carpod.html
Several people have commented on the great quality of the mount... I highly recommend it. Its affordable too.
EDIT: I am unsure why the images won't show, the tags and link are correct. Could a mod please fix this if possible? In anycase all the pictures are visible at my site.

Any body have any installation or idea for an installation where the ipod is constantly plugged into the car and can be accessed while driving, but by closing a box or by sliding a cover or whatever, can be hidden so no one breaks into your car to steal your ipod when your gone. Ill repost this somewhere else if this isnt the right topic. but you guys get what im saying?

Yes, I've got one. I recently did what you are describing in my Jeep. My head unit blew and I made a box that slides in and out of the slot where the head unit used to be. I use an RCA to miniplug cable that is connected to my amp and can be hidden out of sight, but easy to remove when I am leaving the car and going into my house. It cost me a total of $20: sheet metal ($4) spray paint ($1) tin snips ($10) styrafoam ($3) wire ($2). I dont have pictures right now, but I will take some tomorrow and put them up so you can see what it looks like. It works really well for the first build. I will probably be building another soon to make a cleaner version. Anyway, pictures tomorrow.

Here is how I installed my iPod in my 95 Jeep Wrangler.
I bought a piece of metal for an air duct at a local hardware store and measured it to fit in the space where my head unit used to be (7"x5"x2"). I then cut the metal with some tin snips and saudered it together and made a three sided tray with a bottom and a front side, a left side and a right side.
I then took two pieces of styrafoam that were each an inch thick and measured them to fit inside the tray. One was a solid piece which would be the bottom piece, and for the top piece I cut a slot to accomodate my iPod with it's case (Agent 18 click shield).
Next I fastened some picture hanging wire to the bottom of the tray under all of the styrafoam and then attached it to a secure location behind the dashboard. Then all that was left was to connect the RCA to Mini-plug cord to the headphone jack and it was all ready.
Here are the pictures of the installation.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/87322869@N00/9776790/in/set-241658/
That is a picture of the tray when it is slid all the way in.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/87322869@N00/9776793/in/set-241658/
The next picture is as the tray slides out and you can see that it is nearly flush with the foam and does not bump or touch the panel of the dash at all coming in or out.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/87322869@N00/9776792/in/set-241658/
Here is the tray when it is out and hanging. It is so easy to manipulate the controls and view the screen in that position especially with the angle that I mounted it.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/87322869@N00/9776791/in/set-241658/
This is behind the dash where the wire is tied onto some links which are fastened to some sturdy spot behind the dash board.
While this idea worked pretty well, there are some things I would change. One would be to use upholstry foam rather than styrafoam. Another would be to use a better paint. The paint that I bought scratches easily. Also, I would make the tray a little longer (more than 5 inches). But it does work very well, and I will probably be modifying it as well to add room for a car charger.
Let me know what you think about it.

weezer0321,
Your concept looks great! You've got the right idea! What I want to do is make it so that when you pull the tray out, the iPod pops up. And to put it away, you push the ipod down, then push the tray back in. I also want to incorporate the dock into the system.
The concept being that when im in the car, and the ipod is playing, it is upright, angled slightly, and in the dock. When Im out of the car, the ipod is still in the car, plugged in and away from sight. And all I have to do to go between each one, is pull out a tray or push it back in.
Does that make sense? If you want, we can try to work on this together and create a tutorial if it looks good? Let me know what you think.

Pictures taken with SE T637, will get better ones later on :)
Components used:
Blitzsafe - HON/AUX DMX V.1 from Enfig.com
3.5mm to twin RCA cable of unknown origin
Vent Mount cradle from theiStore.com
The hardest part of the install was removing the facia containing the climate control, I was unsure as to how it was fixed, a quick trawl of the 'net threw up some images of where the retaining clips were, after that it took about 40 mins for the complete install.
Why the Blitzsafe instead of an IceLink? Partly money, partly due to the fact that the iPod is closer than the controls on the head unit.
It's not the cleanest install of all time, but I do like it :)

The enfig.com solution. Not the most elegant since all control is through the iPod. I'm planning to move to an icelink or something similar one of these days.

I did a similar thing with my 1999 Accord a couple years back, except I decided to keep my iPod out of site and use the remote. It is pretty slick because most people don't know its there, but you can pull it out and hand it to your passenger and say, "go ahead an pick what you want to listen to." Awe and amazement every time when they realize they have been listening to an iPod the whole time.
I have my photos and instructions at:
jeffbowden dot com slash iPod
This should work for Honda Accords/Civics and some Acuras from 1992-2001 and some others.

I got mine from www.gbxdirect.com also. No issues attaching the Freeway PDA holder to the swivel mount from proclip all the holes line up perfectly. The only thing I did was go to the hardware store and get slightly longer self tapping screws since the ones that it cam with seemed short. I think they are 8 (head size) by 1/4 inch. Anyway they were slightly longer. But if your not aws anal as I am the screws that come with it will work just fine. This mounting system has made my ipod that much more enjoyable and frankly turned out better and much easier to install then I had planned. Good luck and post some pics so we can check out your install.

Once, I bought the iPod mini 6gb silver, I had to get everything for it.
Mods:
-JavoEdge Ebuds
-JavoEdge ClearCase with belt clip
-JavoEdge Screen + Wheel Protectors
-JavoEdge Screen Wiper/Towel
-Apple iPod mini USB AC Adapter
-Griffin iTrip FM Transmitter
-Belkin Aux. Wire for my car
-Advance Auto Parts Brand Cell Phone Holder
I wanted to mount my iPod mini in my car, so I bought an inexpensive cell phone holder from Advance Auto Parts for like $4.95 and it works fine, I have a pic too, but I took it with my Motorola V505, so bare with me with the quality.

Pics of the install I did in my fiancés '03 Toyota Corolla. I know that most people here install the ipod so that they have acess to it but my goal here was to have the ipod out of sit so that it isn't a distraction and if my fiancés leaves it in the car by accident nobody will have a clue there is an ipod in the car (nobody will break in for that reason).
1st pic is of the USA Spec interface box under the passenger seat - hidden when the seat is in its normal position. 2nd pic is the ipod hidden in the center console box.

Attached is a picture of my ipod Photo 60Gb install in my new Toyota Sequoia. I installed the ipod in the top of the center flip up arm rest for both convenience and security. I'm using the "ipod2car" cable and interface for a direct connect to the back of my stock JBL 6-Disc In Dash Changer. The Toyota stereo allows access to the ipod by pressing the "DISC" button on the stereo twice, so I don't lose access to the 6-Disc changer (I doubt I'd use it anyway, now that I have access to 7,700 songs). The ipod2car interface allows me to control FF, REW, SKIP, and charges the ipod. I did drill a small hole in the back of the tray to thread the cable. The rest of the cable is coiled in the main arm rest storage area and runs under the console to the headunit. Access and removal of the console, bezel and radio were very easy. The sound is great. I'd like to mount it on the notepad portion of the armrest but I haven't found the right mount yet. I'd welcome any ideas.

Well..I got my first car...
I want to have my ipod install in my car so I can ditch my radio.
The deck you see above is the default deck I got from the manufacturer.
Obviously, as you can see, it has no inline input nor cassette player.
Is there a way to somehow bring out inline from my car and connect it to iPod?
I really don't want to throw out my currect deck to replace it with iPod-compatible deck...
Any inputs are appreciated..
