my car has a peripheral pxdp system connected to my stock honda stereo. it was used for my ipod, but it doesn't charge my new iphone 3g. doing some quick research i found out, it's because almost all old ipod interfacing hardware used Firewire (12v) to charge the device, but now they use USB (5v).

when i plug it in, my iphone gives me a message that to avoid audio interference you can turn on airplane mode while it's connected. i usually tell it no (i haven't had any interference)

my question is, if ipod/iphones used to charge of a 12v connection and now it uses a 5v connection. could that be damaging to my iphone 3g? or does it have some sort of internal conversion to bring it back down to 5v? my phone has never given me a message other than asking me to put my phone into airplane mode or not.

are you saying the adapter will let you play your 3g on your in dash radio but you are worried about the higher voltage?

I did not even think the adapters would play....do you have to use airplane mode? Do you have a lot of static?

Thanks

I have an older periperal with the same issue. It will not charge at all. It is my understanding (from an apple store genius) that apple disabled FireWire charging so people would not fry their phones. But it has left many iPhone accessories somewhat unusable (there was a recent ask the editor in ilounge that talked about it). When you plug in, check to see if the phone is actually charging, if not then I would say there is no harm except a drain on the battery. You may want to contact peripheral as well to get their response, and any possible fix for the issue. Good luck and let me know if you learn anymore about it.

as a follow up to my last post, when i plug in my iphone i get the "this accessory does not support charging" nag screen, followed by the airplane mode one. i skip the charging screen, say no to airplane mode, and all seems to work fine (except it will not charge the phone, though it charges all my ipods, even my touch...). i would assume if you do not get a warning screen, then all is ok (i get the airplane warning on my logitech speakers, but it charges and everything seems ok).

if i read the ilounge 3G review correctly, the phone only supports usb charging. an accessory that is only firewire will not charge. it seems most newer accessories support both firewire and usb, and the iphone will only charge with usb.

just to be sure, i plan to head by an apple store later to try to get more info.

Updated. At the apple store two employees both said there should be no issue if an older accessory charges the phone. If there is a problem, the phone warns you and will not charge. Hope that helps.

I emailed Peripheral, the company who makes the Ipod2Car interface and this was their response...

Since the release of the Iphone3G, our IPod interfaces will not charge it. This is due to Apple changing from Firewire (which is what we use to charge IPods) and USB charging capabilities to USB only. We are aware of the issue and are working on a fix, unfortunately, there is no ETA.

Then on August 25th he said...

Last I have heard, 60-90 days. There is a notification list, you’re on it.

His email is wade.hamilton at aampofamerica dot com.
Hope that helps.

I'm in the same situation and I'll probably order the adapter later today. But other than power, is there still a way to play back music?

That is correct they change to the 5 volt charging ,they also know there are a lot of adapters interface, charges available
that is why they move the charging pins to a different location on the docking plug ( different pins )

Ice link and USA specs new interface come with this cables, dice electronics will have it in a few weeks

also you can use any old usa spec interface you just need a new cable
if you have any problem locating the charging docking cable for the 3g Itouch Iphone or 4g nano i have a few in stock for $16.00

partyd,

Do you have any of these cables in stock? I emailed USA Spec as their web site states, but have not received a reply.
