View Full Version : Ipod Touch Killing Windows XP

So I've been using my Ipod Touch for a few months without significant problems on my Compaq laptop running XP. Even updated to 2.0 firmware without problem.

Tonight I plug my Ipod Touch (via USB) same as always into my computer, first odd thing I notice is a little icon pops up in the tray saying new USB imaging device found, next I know I get the blue screen of death and my computer restarts?

So, I thought that's odd, open iTunes (have latest version), plug my Ipod Touch in again and same thing, imaging device found, blue screen of death. If I leave the Touch plugged in during restart, it just hangs straight after startup.

I have tried reseting ipod, different USB port, unistalled a couple of programs but still no joy. I cannot even run iTunes and plug my Touch in to restore it.

There were a few Windows updates installed earlier today, curious if anyone has had same problem since installing updates?

Next option is unistall iTunes and start again. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas??

EDIT:

Reinstallation of iTunes has still not fixed this. Any Help??

EDIT (AGAIN):

Well I rolled back my XP 1 week (using system restore) with no joy. Still no replies. Will be re-installing my entire pc next.

your not alone. I have this problem also.
I have reloaded itunes
reloaded my entire ipod

If I plug in to another PC its fine. I took a few xp windows updates just before this problem started.

Any one else know of a fix without a total pc restore?

r u on SP3? Because I updated my copy of XP to SP3 and it did tell me that it found a new device when I tried to sync my iPod but after that it worked just fine. Now if only that silly Backup wouldn't occur everytime ... oh well.. better safe than sorry.

FYI ... instead of doing a PC restore, you may want to try the following

- Restore Windows back to a previous date when iTunes was working fine
- Uninstall all the USB devices in device manager and restart the computer
- Try and load the USB component in Windows Safe mode and see if it works there

Hi Mel81x,

This started before I upgraded to SP3 (i tried that to fix the problem)

This also happened just after I read an article on how to get screen shots on your touch.
So I did a little digging and it appears that some iphone users have had the same thing when pluging in a iphone on which they have taken pics. They seem to think its an issue with driver conflict....

I have not tried it as I am at work (where incidently if I connect my touch it doesn't blue screen) and when I connect my touch here it comes up with a photo loader... remove the screen shots... and it doesn't.

It all fits!

I erckon on my pc at home where I have lots of camera software installed (and logitec webcam) when there are screen shots my pc tries to open software to get the pictuers. No pictures, no problem..

I'll let you know how I get on when I am home

I can't post a link to the info as I am too new

the powers of deduction .. well its good to know you've narrowed down the problem and if other users are also experiencing the same maybe Apple might have to look into it with the next Firmware release.
