icon question: "3G" vs. "E" vs. Dot?

hopefully a quick question

I'm currently on the road and I see the icon beside the provider name (Fido, in my case) switch between 3G and just an E (which I assume is for Edge). Sometimes the icon changes to a dot that looks like a bullet point. What does that mean? I have data roaming disabled but I want to be sure that that's not what that signifies and that I'm not going to be nailed on data roaming.

It is for GPRS. The first time the dot showed up on my iPhone, I didn't know what it meant either. I had to look it up in the user guide.
