To my dismay, last night I bought an amazing radio at Wal-mart, it's an iLive model, with amazing bass, and sound clarity that rivals a good $300 boom box.

Edit: Here is the radio I bought. It's model: IH3807DT
http://www.ilive.net/store/p/12-Home-Music-System-with-Built-in-Subwoofer-Dock-for-iPod-.aspx

If you have the iPod Touch, look into this radio,
the remote control that comes with the radio, does everything under the sun, and is just amazing. Also, as I'm very picky with radios, this radio / boomblaster, also sports separate bass and treble settings ( when used with the "Flat" setting under the EQ menu ). The audio quality is amazing, that's all I can say.

My brother-in-law, pops in his iPod Touch, and it is 100% compatible, the menus, the buttons on the radio, everything works well, in fact, excellent.

I then take my brand new iPhone, and plug it in, hey, it should work right ? ... it's just an iPod Touch with a phone...

So I push the iPhone onto the dock on the new radio, and I get an alert on the iPhone screen saying that this device is NOT compatible ! - The radio would NOT charge the thing, but did start to play a song. However, when I saw this message, I removed the iPhone immediately.

Very very sad stuff. I then did some searching this morning, and find out that the iPhone and iPod Touch are totally 2 different beasts when it comes to the voltage needed to charge the phone.

Needless to say, this beauty of a radio is going back to Wal-mart today, and I feel sad about it. For the price I paid, this thing is a gem, and I am so disappointed it doesn't support the iPhone.

Why oh why would Apple do this ? , - if I were the president of iLive ( the company that produces these radios ) and found out that thousands were returning my product, I'd be very very annoyed with Apple. I am / would be losing great amounts of of money, because the iPhone is not compatible with my product.

If you go your local store right now, there are basically no products that are iPhone compatible. At my local BestBuy for instance, there is nothing that is iPhone compatible, ( certified ) in terms of bases ( docking systems ) nor radios. Everything is for older iPods, and just recently some being compatible for the iPod Touch.

It's sad that I cannot use my Belkin docking system, that I bought for my iPod Touch.
I can't use the charging plug that I use for my iPod Touch ( suppodedly it would blow out the iPhone )

I can't use the Belkin car FM tranmitter cradle / dock in my car that is for my iPod Touch either ( as it also could blow out my iPhone )

I'm not mad, but I am very disappointed in Apple.

Life could be worse. You could be deaf or have no fingers. In which case Apple would suck more in your eyes. You may want to consider therapy to help you thru these disappointing times.

If you had searched through the iLounge forums, you would have gotten a lot more information about it. The new iPhone (3G) does not support the 12V power supply anymore because (1) it has no room for the extra circuit, and (2) Apple has been pretty clear on discontinuing support for the 12V (FireWire) power. If you plugged in a first-generation iPhone to that iLive thing, it should have worked.
