So this may seem like a silly question, but I have a friend who has an iPhone and I have fooled around with it and it is just awesome. Unfortunately, the service is just so expensive. I already have a cell phone, so I want it to be possible to only pay for the data portion of the iPhone. Is it possible to buy an iPhone and only pay a bill for the data portion so that I can use the Apps, internet and iTunes store? I would just not pay for the voice/calling feature. I'm not sure if this is at all possible, so just let me know.

That's definitely not possible.

there's no way data and calling are together in the plan. if your locked into a contract see if you can upgrade soon to a smart phone for data. iPhone is a fun phone but if you can't afford to switch carriers there's plenty of other smart phone out there that will do the same thing just maybe not as pretty

Just get an iTouch, you can use the wifi on that to get your apps and stuff.

Yeah the iTouch I guess is basically the iPhone without calling. I just wanted to be able to use the camera, external speakers and such that the Touch doesn't offer.

Oh just plug it to something like this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Klipsch-iGroove-SXT-Docking-Speaker/dp/B000YICA2O/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1218395370&sr=8-12 and to be honest you ain't missing much with the camera it's pretty low spec compared to the latest mobiles.

Aside from the camera and speaker, the big advantage of the iPhone is its 3G data capability. You can access the Internet where Wi-Fi is not available. If you're serious about wanting an iPhone, you may consider dropping your current cellphone altogether and switching over to AT&T for both voice and data. That's what I did, and I couldn't be happier now.

I'm also a little confused about the monthly payments for an iPhone. Say I dropped my current cellphone outright and I bought an iPhone. I would be a new AT&T customer and I would want voice and data. How much would I pay?
