Got a new i phone 3g today and every time i plug it into my PC it crashes my PC. It just slows the pointer down for about a min and then reboots, and will keep doing this until i unplug it. The little balloon pops up and says a new device was found (i phone) and then starts lagging up and reboots. As far as the iphone goes nothing happens to it it keeps working fine. I'm running windows xp on a 1year old machine and the os is a fresh reinstall from last month .. I do this on a regular basis because windows pretty much sucks after about 6months of surfing the web DL ing programs and all that. Itunes is up to date and there are no other problems with any other software just this. It works on my Macbook pro like it should i just want to use it on my pc for other things. Thanks

ok what are the other specs on your PC? Is it a desktop or laptop? How much ram does it have? What is the processor type and speed? Are you running SP1 / 2 or 3? It really sounds like it's a hardware problem on your computers side, not a problem with the iPhone.

I'd also ask if iTunes is already running on XP when you plug in your iPhone. If not, I'd try starting iTunes first and then plug in the iPhone to see if it makes any difference.
I'd also test other external devices if possible, like a USB hard disk. It will help narrow down the search paths.

My guess - driver problem.
Are you getting a BSOD briefly before the reboot? Watch carefully - it can disappear very quickly!

I'd guess the samething. Perhaps something with that Apple Mobile Services thing?

Yes it is a 3.0 gig lintel machine, 3 gig of ram desktop. Just DL service pack 3 and i never mentioned the problem was with the i phone because it works with my macbook pro i just would like to use a couple of apps on the pc side of things like videora and a few others. And i have tried plugging it in with itunes running and not running ,, i have a new ipod 80gig that works just fine with the system just cant seem to get the iphone to work. No BSOD actually this time just reboots right to black. Thanks

I'd start by checking Window's event logs immiately after the reboot. Unless it's a hardware roblem nothing should be able to crash the Windows OS other than code running in kernel mode, and the only 3rd party code that can do this is device drivers.
Start with a complete uninstall/reinstall of iTunes and all it's associated services. Make sure everything's gone before reinstalling. If that doesn't work post back and we'll try some other things.
On a slightly different note - reinstalling Windows every 6 months really isn't necessary. It's not doing anything that you can't do another, much easier/quicker way...
