If you use the search bar provided it returns the results in the standard google window which makes them hard to read. If you go to google dot com (I can't post links yet apparently), it recognizes it as a mobile device and adjusts the screen automatically for both the search screen and the results.
Does this bother anyone else?

I am with you on this. They should display the search results in the mobile format for better legibility.

well the one reason I can think of that it is like this is because the google mobile version for iPhone actually came out after the first generation iPhone. I have wondered though if they will ever change the firmware coding so that it points to the Google mobile version instead. It doesn't seem like it would be that hard, but it's probably not too high on apples priority list.

I think it would need to be on Google's priority list, not Apple's. The Google mobile app for iPhone is a Google product and so they pretty much determine how it works (or doesn't). Conspiracy theorists would posit this as Google being evil and setting Android up for a better user experience...

I'm not talking about the google app, I'm talking about the search bar in safari. I don't care who fixes it, I just want it done :-P

I suspect they don't do it because Apple doesn't want to. Their catch phrase was "This is not the mobile internet, it's the real internet" They are trying to give you the same experience as if you were on a regular computer. Using Google Mobile would defeat the purpose no matter how annoying you may find it.

Why does Safari take you to the mobile sites instead of the full sites now, then? If you type in "google.com" in Safari, it will automatically take you to the mobile version of Google now. Where is the "real Internet"?
The "real" web sites are getting bigger and heavier these days. It just doesn't make sense to expect to be able to browse those "real" sites comfortably on mobile devices. That is why a lot of Web sites have created the mobile- or iPhone-optimized versions.

How hard is it to double-tap the screen?

seriously. I actually find it to be more beneficial because you can easily view images, news, etc. None of that 7 images per page then boot you to the normal page crap.

I don't know but I just went to Google on my iPhone and came up as the full Google with the mobile option at the bottom of the page.

If you change the settings within google, then yes it will allow you to go to the PC version automatically. In some instances however, changing these settings is not necessary

That's not Safari doing that, it's Google. It detects the iPhone and loads the mobile version instead. It stores a cookie so that it remembers that setting. You can click the link on that page and tell it to load the original Google page, and it'll load that from then on.

Actually, clicking the "Classic" link on the Google Mobile page will take you to what seems like the PC version, but Safari won't remember it. The next time I type in "www.google.com" it will still take me to the mobile site. It is with firmware 2.0.1.
Not that I'm complaining about it. I'd much prefer using mobile sites than the full-scale sites that are bloated with unnecessary graphics and ads. Someone mentioned double-tapping, but that will only zoom in to certain sections of the page. One of the great things about iPhone-optimized sites is that you can read the whole page without zooming in or scrolling all over the place.

Oh, I hadn't noticed since I don't use it anymore.. I guess they changed it. It used to save the setting.
But you mention unnecessary graphics, etc.. I find Google mobile is actually slower to load than the regular one.

I meant "in general." Google Mobile may very well be an exception. :)
How about these iLounge forums, for instance? Their PC versions aren't all that much clogged with "unnecessary graphics," but they still load slower than the mobile versions do. :D

It would really be interesting to see what ilounge does with their site and the integration with the iphone. I laud the current mobile version, but if there were more features - some perhaps even unique to the iphone and itouch, then we truly would be one huge interconnected community.
I know for myself ilounge's mobile forums have taken posting and keeping current to a whole new level.
