Both my son and I have a touch. I do all my updating on my work computer. My son uses the home computer do manage his library, but I bring it to work whenever it needs an update because we only have dialup available at home.

I paid for the 2.0 update for my touch, then did the 2.0.1 update. I brought in his touch today thinking I would pay for the 2.0 update.

Upon connecting his touch, the update window came up indicating an update to 2.0.1 was available. I clicked update, then another window popped up indicating that all the music, movies, pictures, etc. would be lost from the touch. I clicked cancel because that didn't happen when I updated my touch.

So I went to purchase 2.0 for his touch, thinking that was the problem. Upon following the buying procedure, a window popped up, indicating that I already bought it and asked if I would like to download it again for free. Upon clicking yes, it is supposed to update the touch, but nothing happens. I don't really care to update his to 2.0 for free since I already purchased it, I am more than willing to pay again to update his touch. But every time I try to buy it it goes through the whole procedure the same way.....you already purchased it....do you want to download it again for free.....then doesn't update his touch.

I just want to buy it and get his updated....but I cant.

Thanks in advance for any help !!!!

You may have to use another PC, or at the very least, another account for iTunes. I don't think iTunes is "smart" enough to differentiate between different Touches.

I think you can install 2.0.1 on your son's Touch from your work computer, but in doing so it will erase the contents (just like when you updated your Touch to 2.0, yours was erased in the process). I think that's why you got the warning "all the music, movies, pictures, etc. would be lost from the touch". If your son has all his media on the home computer and doesn't mind re-loading it, you should be able to update his Touch to 2.0.1 either by clicking the "Update" button or by selecting the Restore option.

Alternatively, you can copy the .ipsw file for the 2.0 or 2.0.1 update and transfer it to your home computer (this file is the OS installation file, located in your PC's folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\(user name)\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates

It is a very large file (~200MB) so use a USB thumb drive with enough capacity to transfer this file to the same folder on your home computer, then see if you can Update or Restore at home.

Someone around here claims that they went from 1.1.5 to 2.0.1 without having their Touch erased, which surprises me. Maybe if you have enough extra space to load the 2.0/2.0.1 OS then you don't have to lose everything, but my Touch was maxed out and I had to re-load everything after the update.
