I want to try and get some quality earphones as ive had the sony HPM 70 and the mdr-ex71 for quite a long time but i would like to try some of the best earphones around. I have a budged of $60-90 and headphones like the shure SE110-N (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Shure-SE110-N-Sound-Isolating-Earphones/dp/B000WDSSYA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1216939589&sr=8-2) look good and so do the ultimate ears metro.fi 2 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ultimate-Ears-Metro-fi-Headphones-Black/dp/B000JFHEL4/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1216940274&sr=8-3) but i want to know which is better and which headphones i should go for. I like listening to rock mainly (anything from indie to metal) but i dont want something with a overpowering bass. Ive read some poor reviews of these earphones but it may be that they download there music at a poor sample rate. So which should i go for?

The ultimate ears would be better. Personally I've never been a fan of the low end shures. They just don't have clear sound.

I'm just the opposite. Haven't tried the UEs but I love my Shures.

I just got a pair of $200 Shures (SE210) and they totally suck, returning them first thing tomorrow. There is basically no bass at all.

The SE210's have no bass and no clarity in general. My 80$ er-6i's are loads clearer and are much much less money.

The cheap Ultimate Ears Metro Fi's are surprisingly good. I bought a pair on a US trip when I lost the earpiece from my day to day phone.
You might also consider the Sennheiser CX300.

ive just increased my budget to $100-120 (£50-60) so the ultimate ears super.fi 3s are in my budget as well as the shure se210s although again im leaning towards the super.fi 3s but they need to be every day headphones so i dont really want the detachable cord falling off while im on the bus and they are going to be in my pocket for quite a bit. Its kinda why im leaning more towards the metro.fi 2s now even though those headphones are in my budget.

You could nearly afford Denon 551s at that price.....
You could also consider V-Moda Vibes and Sony EX90s.
All good phones, all with metal bodies, and all with their own unique advantages.
So many phones.....

Agreed-Sony's EX series are very nice and interesting angle earpiece-unsual, but I like it.
You'd be quite happy with the EX90's.

I'm not an audiophile but I find my Shure SLC2s to be very clear. There isn't much bass but I like the more balanced sound. Took me about two weeks to get it to sound the way it does now, when I first tried them they sound too tinny.

This thread isn't just about you though, it is perfect for someone to find while using the search tool later on. The thread doesn't necessarily have to end when the OP has solved their problem.
