"you're always on your phone"
"that phone is your love"
"oh don't get him started he'll research it on google"
"no wonder the battery is always dead"
We've probably all heard something similar at some point. The principal remains the same. How come people feel the need to berate iPhone users or call them out? Perhaps it's a bit of jealousy but maybe a mix of jealousy and misunderstanding. I think a lot of people fail to realize that the iPhone is not just a phone. The result is a lumping of the iphone into the category of a basic text or chat device - something a pre teen might be consumed by.
Sometimes I just get tired of people belittling the iPhone and it's users simply because they don't have the slightest clue what it is actually like to own one. I use my phone for everything, literally EVERYTHING moreso than a computer even.
How about you guys? Does anyone else get hassled?

I don't particularly like the iPhone simply because it doesn't suit me the way I think a Blackberry or Dare might (I know: two totally diiferent devices--but that's a different argument altogether.).
However....
Deriding someone for such a shallow reason as device choice? Twuntish.

I may be lucky. I have a lot more iPhone fans than iPhone haters around me. I have two close co-workers who use and love Apple products. They both have iPod touches and MacBook Pro's. We always talk positively about Apple. It's a fun work environment. :)

I think it's funny because most Apple lovers are attracted to the fact that Apple products have been, for the most part, the opposite of mainstream. There are many Mac owners that love to say that they don't own a PC (much like Firefox & Opera users feel superior to Internet Explorer users). But now that the iPod and iPhone have become mainstream, they've lost their appeal as an underdog. Like something for what it is, not because of the attitude you think it gives you.

I get this sickly sarcastic "Oh... is that one of those iPhones?" As if I had yellow fever or something. It's probably because I live in Portland Oregon, where hipsters think it's cool to be "above" Apple.

I find my experiences to be the opposite of those who have posted. Most people that I show my device to are really impressed by the capabilities. Some of my friends will make fun of me because I like to google everything that we are debating about but, for the most part, there are a lot of people who haven't seen one up close and in person. I always joke that I should be a spokesperson for the company and get paid because I do demos all the time when I'm in public. Albeit I don't have the superfast 3g coverage, google maps is sure to amaze anyone who doesn't own a gps device. The display is beautiful for pictures and some of the new apps are great. What's not to love? (Besides the lack of mms, video camera, and flash)

I get it semi-frequently. I'll be out with friends, someone will wonder something, I'll whip out my iPhone and get some ribbing about it. I recently refused to look for a gas station on it because of a similar comment.

Who cares if they belittle your phone. U wanted it, u got it, that's it.
They are jelous, don't even pay 'em attention. At the same time, no need to flaunt that yer superior in some way.

This is just not limited to iPhones. I was a WinMo user and was able to do damn near everything I needed from my phone. My ex once asked me if I could go without using the phone for 24 hours. I told her I could, but choose not to. I feel the same way about my 3G. I don't "need" it, but I absolutely love it.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I don't feel offended when people pull that attitude with me. As you say, they're just jealous.

I'm the same as Surf. Here's the scenario I get at least twice a week:
Person: Hey, what kind of phone is that? Do you like it?
Me: iphone, and yes I couldn't live without it. It does email, web, and many other things very well.
Person: Yeah, my bill is $30 a month, $75 is way too expensive for a phone! Besides, I don't even need email, or a camera, or a touch screen, or visual voice mail, I use my phone as a phone.
Me: Well that's all fine and dandy, but maybe you'd use these things if your phone actually did them well?
Person: No, I just need my phone to be a phone.
Me: That's interesting.....me too.

The wife and I picked up some furniture today and the couple who own the store were very curious about my phone. Apparently he REALLY wants one but the local store is out of them. That was a refreshing change. We discussed it for the ten minutes it took to get our credit checked.
