Not sure how many people have figured this out already, but if you haven't, then here ya go:

Pick a song on iTunes.
Right click on it, then click on Get Info.
Goto the Options tab.
Change the Start Time and Stop Time to what part of the song you want the ringtone to be. (It doesn't work if it's more than 30 seconds long)
Click OK.
Right click on the song again, then click on Convert Selection to ACC. This makes a duplicate of the song, but only of the length that you selected in the original.
Drag this copy onto your desktop.
Change the file extension from "m4a" to "m4r".
Double click on it, and it should open up in iTunes as a ringtone.
Now you have yourself a custom ringtone. :)

But be sure to go back to the original song and change the length back to the original, so you can actually listen to the whole song. You can delete the duplicate version also.

The real question is... Can you do it for more than one song at a time? I've only succeeded in having one custom song at a time. If I make more than one it just duplicates it on the phone.

I can't get more than one ringtone at a time on the phone. Whenever I make a new ringtone from a different song, and put it on the iPhone, it just makes a duplicate copy of the first ringtone. Any ideas?

weird. make sure they have different ID3 tags (as in not blank ones) and different file names as well, also try putting them in separate locations

I had this same problem and this thread is definitely not a new topic. You just go through the same process for each song my editing the run time of the song and then convert to acc. You must rename to .mp4 and double click on it and they should be stored under your ringtone tab. Once this is done, you must sync your phone. I could only get three at a time by using the phone to manually store songs and movies.

This worked for me, but I had to delete the shortened file before iTunes would add the ringtone.

Does anyone have any guidance on doing this with songs purchased from the iTunes Music Store?

Make sure your file names are different for each ringtone, and make sure that your itunes is set to sync ALL ringtones.

Two issues with this method are that (1) it can't be used to create a ringtone from an iTunes-purchased (i.e. DRM'd) song, and (2) you can't add fade-in / fade-out. If that's not an issue with you, then it's a very easy and convenient method.

I myself use GarageBand to create my own ringtones. I got the instructions from a kind soul on this forum. :)
