does anyone have a rough idea how likely apple are to release a 32GB before xmas i.e they can get 32GB NAND meomry at a certain wholesale price, or how likely are apple to phase out 8GB

Anyone's guess, really, but I'd bet against it happening that soon. Apple is going to want iPods in the spotlight from September through the holiday season.

ya the Iphone is already best in class for storage. I don't think they will update anytime soon.

It'll look pretty ugly if they do that so soon after the initial release. Remember when everyone freaked out when they dropped the price on the original?

They've been selling the 32GB iPod touch since March so the hardware is already available. It will just be a matter of their strategy.

I too don't think Apple would be stupid enough to release a 32GB iPhone this early after the launch of the 3G iPhone. That would just #### off a lot of people that picked up the 16GB 3G iPhone and alienate a lot of potential buyers as well. Think about it, if a company released a new device and then followed it up in a few months with the same device but with juiced up specs who would want to bother buying?
I say if anything, Apple doubles the iPhone capacities around the same time next year so as to not cannibalize the sales of the current models. Like was said earlier, they will most likely concentrate on a new model iPod instead for the upcoming holiday shopping season.

thoang77,
Unless you're willing topay big bucks for an official unlocked iPhone 3G that they sell in Hong Kong. ;-)

Actually it's not as simple as that. The iPod touch uses two flash chips (2x 16GB in the 32GB model) combined to give the total storage space. Due to the extra space needed by the GSM/HSDPA/GPS/etc hardware inside the iPhone, it only has room for a single flash chip. Therefore we probably won't see a 32GB iPhone until single 32GB flash chips become readily available and probably come down in price. Also we'll probably see a 64GB touch at the same time as it can take advantage of two of the 32GB chips...

thought touch would go up to 64GB in september and iPhone go up to 32GB maybe wiseful thinking

No way. As I said, September is all about iPod. It's the launch of Apple's holiday lineup. Nothing that takes the spotlight away from iPod is going to happen. No how, no way.

They'll probably have a 32gb iPhone in August, lower the price by $200 and give all the early adopters $100 gift cards.
Just a hunch.

pleasse..... no offense but like someone said earlier.. the ipods are overdue for an update in capacity so that they can get back to the forefront....im hoping that s.jobs releases a 32gb iphone by jan 09 b/c thats when my sprint contract is up...
but all in all.. there will be no mercy for the current 3g owners, they know apple's reputation, they stood in long lines for a reason b/c they couldnt wait....so they're gonna get what they deserved b/c apple will probably drop an updated iphone b/w dec 08-feb09.... but they will probably put out some bigger ipod touches and reduce the classic's price in september.... 32gbs is def. not good enough...

This has been Apple's primary marketing strategy for all of their products for some time now.

Thanks for the corrections, Tom. I knew the 32GB iPod touch had two 16GB chips, but I thought the new iPhone would also have enough space for those.

that's my guess too. That's why i bought a 1st get iPhone instead of a 3g. That and the battery life. I'm waiting for the 32 gig iPhone...
