I've had an FM transmitter in the car for a long time, since the days when I used my iRiver H320.

With the iRiver, I had to plug the transmitter into either the headphone socket or the line out, pump up the volume on the iRiver to "fairly" loud levels, and pump up the stereo a little.

With my iPhone, I seem to have to pump up the iPhone to MAX and the stereo to VERY high before I can really hear anything.

Am I missing something? Do I need an iPod specific FM transmitter?

You'd definitely be better off with an iPhone-specific FM transmitter like the ones that Garmin or Belkin sell. These connect to the Dock Connector on the iPhone, and most of them charge the iPhone while they're at it and eliminate possible RF interference from the cellular antennae.

The audio signal from the Dock Connector is the equivalent of a "line-out" on the iPhone, where the headphone port is intended to drive headphones and therefore uses a much lower level output.

Thanks for the info Jesse. I will have a look online for a transmitter dock.
