I am going to be buying an iPhone at sometime in the near future, and I am curious to know which plan is the most popular?

Right now, I have got Sprint, which offers 900 minutes and free night and weekends starting at 7pm w/200 text. I get this all for approx. $72 monthly. I don't have any internet or anything like that.

At&t shows that I can get 450 anytime minutes and 5000 night and weekend for 69.99. Throw in additional text for another $5, so I'm up to approx. $75. Now, this is HALF of what I was getting with Sprint. I would getting a lot more out of my iPhone though, of course. And At&t has roll over minutes, where Sprint does not have any such service.

So, with this said, which plan do you have?

I am thinking, if I go for the 450 minutes, and really don't talk all too much the first month, then all my minutes will roll over, and then I won't go over! LOL I just got off the phone with a Sprint Rep, and asked her what my background history was for minute usage, and she said ( within the last 4 months ) that I have never gone over 500 minutes, my night and weekends were at 1500 approx, and my texting topped out at 80. So, I think I might be alright with the cheaper plan. However, it always bothers me that I might go over, and have a heafty bill to pay.

I think you answered you own question. Go lean the first month to bank up the minutes, then you're set. 450 plan is good. My wife and I never went over and we shared the minutes. Mobile to mobile (AT&T only) is free too.

Keep in mind, your nights and weekends start at 9pm with at&t unless you pay the 9.00 to start at 7p. That's huge with me, so I'll have to pay that and a text plan. I also have sprint, and because I get a corporate discount, pay around 60.00 for 550 min, 7p start, vision (evdo), and 300 texts. I figured with at&t/iphone 3g it'll be about 100.00 for less minutes and less texts...even though I'll have wifi and gps. I doubt I'll have any rollover minutes since I"m usually down to the last few minutes if I don't go over. Sucks, but I really want the iphone. My contract with sprint is up in september, so I'll see if spending the extra 40.00/month is worth it after trying it out.

I went with the £35 a month plan with 500 texts and 600 mins. I will have to keep an eye on my usage though, I may go over the 500 this month so may stump up the extra for unlimited texts which will be an extra £7.50 a month. It is kind of annoying that O2 assumes that iPhone customers will chat more than they text. Hoping one day that Facebook chat or something similar becomes the main form of communication to stop the complete rip off that is SMS. O2 signal in my house is quite good compared to other networks so I have started using it as my main phone more, so I will start using more minutes now as well. Looking at my previous bills though I worked out that the £35 a month would be more than enough so hopefully I won't need to pay anymore.

unfortunately, AT&T has already thought of your clever little plan. Leftover minutes from the first billing cycle do NOT roll over.

I am with the cheapest plan (i.e. $69.99 a month). I don't make/receive too many phone calls, so 450 anytime minutes is way more than enough for me. I too used to be with Sprint, where my wife and I shared 200 anytime minutes! Even that was good enough for us.

Like you said, the benefit of the iPhone goes way beyond simple phone calls. :)

I got the cheapest plan as well. I NEVER go beyond on my minutes. I considered the text messaging plan, but it really wasn't worth it and, frankly, should be free with the advanced data plan.

Is the $8.99 more per month worth it for earlier nights? I can't decide if it's more worth it to add that or get the next plan up for $20. more a month which gives you 900 minutes.

This is complete rubbish and not true at all. Would it make sense for AT&T to promote this as a major feature and then throw in fine print that subscribers are barred the first month from taking advantage of it?

I have personally done exactly what NeverFade was planning, by not using very many minutes the first month and then use them as needed afterward.

I was on the early night and weekends option just long enough to rack up a good amount of rollover minutes and then canceled the early N&W.

You also have to consider also a large percentage of your friends and family are probably already with AT&T and that will also lower your usage substantially. After much convincing, my girlfriend finally switched to AT&T and I never go over 100 minutes a month now on the 450 plan.

You just have to ask yourself: "Do I talk during the daytime hours more than 15 minutes a day?" If not, I think you'll be fine, especially once those rollover minutes start accruing.

450 minutes is MORE than enough for me... I actually wish I could lower how many minutes I have and use that money toward text messages...but I cannot.

Most of the people I talk to have AT&T...and my rollover minutes are high.

Same here. I'd much rather have a cheaper plan with fewer minutes... like $49.99 per month for 200 anytime minutes and 2000 night/weekend minutes. I'd jump on that.

That's nice. Most of my friends are with Verizon. :(

I actually converted both of my iPhones to the family talk plan, the lowest one with 700 minutes. Both iPhones are running about $140. It seems high but then you have to remember, one iPhone is 3G so it has the $30 data plan + additional for SMS, and the other, the $20.

I'm currently paying $39.99/month for 450 anytime (800 after including promo/bonus offers) and 3500 night/weekend minutes...and that includes two lines--compare that to the cheapest 2-line voice plan currently available to most customers which is $59.99 for 550 minutes (I think YMMV depending on market area); after FAN discount it's $29/month... :D

The decision I'll have to make pretty soon is whether I'm willing to give up this plan if I decide to get a 3G iPhone--I've been told by AT&T that either yes I can keep it or no I can't...I won't really know for sure until they try to activate the iPhone on my account.

Aw shucks...to be honest, 1) I've read of someone else (not here) who had a much-more impressive plan than mine ($39.99 but includes rollover, M2M, and fixed text message bundle--one line instead of two lines though); 2) my plan isn't as impressive as it appears to be--it's not a Nation plan and doesn't offer rollover and unlimited M2M minutes. However, I don't make/receive a lot of calls to begin with (thus I'd never have a need to tap into any rollover minutes I accrue), and hardly travel outside my home coverage area (CA/NV) so I don't absolutely need the nationwide coverage. But for my needs, it is definitely a bargain of a voice plan.

One other disclosure about my voice plan--it is a legacy/grandfathered plan, so if I upgrade my plan I can never get it back again...hence why I may probably pass on the 3G iPhone if AT&T's system won't allow me to keep my voice plan w/ the iPhone.

I have ATT on a different phone.
Minutes do roll over starting from the first month.
But roll over minutes are only good for the following month, i.e July rollover minutes expire on Aug 31

deftdrummer1

jerome that's not true either. Rollover minutes expire one year from the month they were acquired on the same month. Unless they've drastically changed something this is how it's always been.

Yeah, you're right. I misread the bill.
I just looked at my bill again.
It states the number of rollover minutes that will expire at the end of the billing cycle, and the number was 0 (I thought it was the number of my rollover minutes).
Shoot, I have a ton of minutes now !

Dunno if the FamilyTalk Nation plan pricing is uniform regardless of what part of the country you're in, but assuming that it is (least-expensive FamilyTalk voice plan used here for purposes of this exercise and assumes no data plan on the two regular lines):

FamilyTalk Nation 550 (includes iPhone 3G line and one regular line): $59.99
--(or if FT 550 is not available in your market area, then it's FT 700): $69.99
Data plan required for iPhone 3G: $30.00
Cost for the second regular line: $9.99
Unlimited messaging on the iPhone line: $20.00
--(or if you prefer, unlimited messaging for all 3 lines): $30.00

Total: from $119.98/month to $139.98/month depending on whether or not FT 550 is available in your area and/or which unlimited messaging feature you choose.

Note--total does not include taxes, cost of equipment, activation or upgrade fee ($36 and $18 respectively), any other features you may want to add to your account, and any applicable/qualified service discounts.
