currently any iPhone with an aluminium back is 1st Gen and everything else is 2nd Gen.

How does everyone know when their phone was made like for instance someone would say their was a "june phone" or something like that? Did they really change much of the components from month to month? I think I was reading something about the speakers from the original release phone. Someone please correct me if I'm totally out of line with this idea.

there were some screen changes in the beginning but all other components states the same. You can tell by the serial number or some of the other info in the software I believe.

The 4th and 5th digits of the serial number will tell you the week it was made

If you go to this site (http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html) and enter your serial number you can find out additional information about any Apple product. It doesn't have everything for the iPhone 3G yet, however.

Ok, thanks for the info. I saw mine was a week 49 production. So when did they change the screen? Was there anything notable with that change? I'm just interested for no particular reason.

Mine says 29 (4th and 5th digits). I guess it means week 29, which is the second week of July (this month)?

Nevermind... I just checked with the site above. :)
