Getting a Used Iphone:Need answers please!

My friend is getting the new 3G iphone and is selling me his old iphone. I've never had the iphone so there's some questions I need answers to before I get it. I can't ask him, he's out of town and I won't get the phone for a while still plus I don't want to look stupid. I know he unlocked and jailbroke(?) the phone. I don't know what version he did it with. I don't have a cellphone now, can I buy a cheap pay as you go phone and install the sim card in the iphone? Would I be limited to what services I use it with? I would like to update to version 2.0 to get the appstore, but still use the phone as a phone, I already have a touch. What would be the advice you'd give? Especially anyone who may have done this already. Thanks.

OK after some searching and checking, I've gotten some answers but also more questions.

1. Can you put a pay as you go sim card into the Iphone if I jailbreak firmware 2.0? And are there any suggestions on which carrier is best to use? I'm thinking of either T-Mobile or AT&T. Any opinions?

2. Would I still be able to use the app store if I jailbreak firmware 2.0? I'd like to get some of the more stable free apps from the app store.

3. Do any pay as you go plans include internet? I'd probably use my Iphone more for internet than as a phone. I don't text much and would just use the phone as needed.

1. Yes. Regardless of weather you jailbreak it, you'll have to unlock it. Also, you've only got AT&T or T-Mobile to choose from in the states for GSM carriers.

3. They don't include internet, you'll have to get that added on as a service as you activate the pay-as-you-go phone. After your pay-as-you-go plan and your cheap phone is working, then take out the SIM and put it into the unlocked iPhone. Apparently it works well.
