I am not an owner of a iPod Touch, but now that I have seen the latest software I am considering getting one.

If I go to the Apple Store and purchase a new Touch will it include 2.0 of the firmware or will I still need to download and purchase it separately for $10?

Thanks,

No, it will not include the 2.0 update. It normally takes retail stores about 4-8 weeks before getting updated iPod touch model and Apple stores about 1-2 weeks depending on how big it is. For example, the Apple store near where I live won't receive 2.0 iPod touch models until next week.

So I guess the best thing to do is to order the old version from Amazon for $349 and then pay $10 for 2.0 upgrade which also includes the January Update. Are there any hardware differences between this unit and the latest units sold at the apple store?

There aren't any hardware differences, just a difference in OS. Purchasing a unit from Amazon, paying for OS 2.0, and then installing it will yield the exact same results as you buying a OS 2.0 iPod touch from Apple directly.

Just a head up: Apple should be coming out with a new/updated iPod touch sometime this September. It might have some hardware updates or it could be a full blown new generation iPod touch, no one knows. It might be worth it to wait 2 months to see what they do.
