Hey guys,

Recently I picked up a set of Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pros. I notice there is a very mild crackle in the left phone, I asked around a bit and it has been mentioned that it maybe just the quality the mp3s are ripped to. But I can hear it in a range from 192 - 320, any advice? Should I be looking to return them?

Cheers.

welcome to the lounge :)

if you can hear the same crackles with another pair of earphones then it's likely to be the track.

You can always try swapping the actual body of the monitor around ie left for right, and if the crackle is still there then it's likely to be the 'phones. Since the cables on these UE's are replaceable it's not too difficult to pull the cables out - just be patient and gentle!!

If they are faulty, UE have excellent customer service and you just email them and they'll give you an RMA and instructions to send back. Then they'll send you another set.

Took about two weeks in total when I had to send them in from Aus.

Thank you sir :)

Cool, I'll get another set of phones and give them a listen..

Sucks to have to send them back if I do though, my ears have become accustomed to quality now ;)

How come you had to return yours?

you know when i mentioned that you should "just be patient and gentle" when taking the cables out.... ;)

I was trying to do the UE 'flip flop' mod...

http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f4/ultimate-ears-flip-flop-mod-please-help-275161/

i prefer the way it sits after the mod, though there is debate as to whether it should be done or not in the first place - UE did have a video showing you how to do it, but it seems they've taken it off now.

anyway if it seals well the normal way then you're fine :)

I personally found the flip flop way much superior (there's some pics of my ears in that head-fi thread :)) to the regular way.

That said, you may as well try switching cable sides whether or not you plan on sticking with the flip flop mod since UE will require you to do this before hand to troubleshoot between a cable versus a driver problem. If it's a problem in the cable, they'll just mail you a new cable no charge with super.fis, if it's the driver you'll have to mail them back.

If it does come to that, I'd call their customer service number versus the webform/email route, you'll get an RMA number immediately instead of waiting.

I see now... Well, I took you advice and went nice a gently and I swapped them round. I think it is the mp3s.. The sound is perfect on the particular album I'm listening to now..

On a side not, the flipping them makes the comfort level go through the roof, I can barely feel them in my ear and they make a far better seal in my case..

Cheers for the help dudes!
