Gonna sell my 32Gb touch and get a iPhone. Gonna get an older one because.......

1. I got no 3G in my area (western NC) and WTF knows when it's coming? Anybody?
2. The only thing I'd be missing out on is GPS but the iPhone GPS probably won't do turn by turn cause of the battery life issues and the cell-tower/wifi-triangulation works ok anyway so I'll just get a Garmin for the serious stuff.
3. I can use the pay-as-you-go option or unlock and put a Go-Phone SIM or other carriers SIM in it so I don't have to deal with a contract. Which is HUGE.

Here's my questions.....

1. What's the difference in the data plans between using a Go-Phone SIM card with the Medianet data plan vs. the data plan that was included with the older iphone also over the Edge network? Is there any? I think maybe the Medianet with the Go-Phone SIM in there does everything through a proxy server and may be a little slower.

2. What is the current voice/data plan for users of the original phone? I want to do Pay-As-You-Go so I'll just be buying a used/old phone and going through Itunes to activate.

3. If I don't do that or it's cheaper I'll just buy a Go-Phone, set up the plan and put the SIM card in the iPhone. I might loose visual voice mail with the Go-Phone SIM and the data plan might be slower.

What do you guys think?

I just *tried* to call at&t/cingular to ask them some questions about how it would work to activate a used first gen iphone for pay-as-you-go and I got some Indian guy who could barley understand me. He then tried to transfer me to Go-Phone where I waited and then got a horrible fax machine sound. He then came on over the noise to as for my phone number for to call me back, which he did and put me on hold again for Go-Phone. I waited for 10 minutes and hung up. *Sigh*

What am I getting myself into?
