I'm an existing AT&T customer with five months on my 2 year contract. I have a crappy LG Trax flip phone. When I dance into the AT&T store to get a 3G Iphone, how much should I expect to pay for the 16GB version?

I have a friend who works at an AT&T store, and he says that I probably will have to pay full price! That's $499 for the 16GB phone, AND I'll have to start out with a brand new 2 year contract!.:shake:

Is that true?

I think existing subscriber should renew the two year contract for the iPhone 3G, so the 5 months would be reset to zero. and yes, you'll have to pay $299 for the 16GB iPhone.

Asking here won't help you. None of us know if you're upgrade eligible or not. You should go to ATT's Web site, log in and check your account details. That's where you can find out of you're eligible for an upgrade or not.

Actually, some of us do, since AT&T has been pretty specific about it.

You will either have to wait until you are eligible for an upgrade (check online by logging into your account), or pay $499.

Yeah Cochese is correct. If you signed up with another phone that put you into the situation where it will cost you the most. Aside from paying even more for a pay as you go phone, you will be paying the highest price at $499 to upgrade to the 16GB.

As much as I hate that answer, it makes sense to me.

I noticed on a few other sites that people are trying to get the upgrade if they don't have an iPhone. What they do is borrow a friends iPhone, swap SIM cards and activate through iTunes so that it will show on the AT&T page as upgrade eligible. Then they reswap iphones.

I would figure that AT&T is smarter than that, and will tie the serial number of the iPhone with the SIM card so that only one is upgradable.

I'm not trying this trick. My plan is to simply take my wife's iPhone , get a new 3G one, and give her back the old iPhone.

It is possible to do this?

My sister is on my family talk plan, and bought the old iphone in march. Could i use her upgrade to get a subsidized 3g iphone, and then put that phone on my line, along with data without hassle?

Thanks in advance

Well, AT&T doesn't confiscate your old iPhone, so I'm sure you can give it to whoever. I would THINK it's possible.

You may have to bring your sister into the AT&T/Apple store, get her to sign up for the new iPhone, and then get the AT&T rep to register your number to the new phone.

Since most AT&T reps I've found are dumb as rocks -- it's a grim thought that this process will go smoothly the first day.

If you go to the att.com site and look up your account it will say if you are eligible for an upgrade or not.

If you ARE then your iPhone will cost you $199 or $299

If you AREN'T it will cost you $299 or $399.

This from a rep I talked with today.
