I am going to AT&T store in Cuyahoga Falls, OH around 6:00 am. Was told by people at the store that should be a good time to get there, but they are expecting people to camp out on Thursday. Would go to Apple store in Cleveland but don't feel like driving 30 miles that early in the morning.

I wouldn't camp or wait in line at all. I would go 2 or 3 hours after opening so you can ensure that the lines have died down and you can be in and out in 20 minutes. Otherwise you will be waiting like all the other schmucks, even though there is plenty of phones for everyone.

The AT&T store I went to yesterday said they would probably run out in about two hours.

Any any rate, your nearest AT&T stores are probably in Stow and there at two stores there. The total population is roughly 60,000 between the cities of Stow and Hudson and it appears to be well within the 3G coverage area so I would take his advice with a grain of salt cause ultimately nobody knows what kind of demand there will be. Try to show up at opening or maybe a little before. Two hours before, camping, is laughable this time around. There should be enough stock to at least cover the weekend like last time if not longer. Then daily shipments will be coming in according to AT&T.

Camping out is lame. There's going to be plenty of these. If they sell out on the first day, you may have to wait another week to get one. I don't think 7 days waiting for a phone is going to spell the end of the world.

I was actually reading that AT&T will be getting them every other day or so. Apple stores should have them at all times. Open and shut case Johnson.

Agreed. The fanboys should give their blood pressure a rest. This thing isn't the savior. It's just a phone... and guess what? There are going to be plenty of them available. If you don't rush to be the VERY FIRST ONE to buy one, you'll be fine. Apple isn't going to kill your grandma if you don't wait in line all night. Relax. Plenty of people probably won't even head to the stores until Saturday anyway.

The only time i'm going to have an issue is when the iphone I have now sells on eBay before I get a new one. Or if AT&T doesn't add 3G coverage wher I live by the end of summer or sooner.
I will check the night before to see who is there. Probably like 3am. I like waiting out. I go with my younger cousins and they have a blast.
No one HAS to wait out. But understand its a choice and you can enjoy it :)
I will prolly go to my ATT store around 7:30-7:45. We will see if I can sleep or not lol
I'll hit the local AT&T on the way to work. If no luck, I'll try the Apple store on the way home.

From my observations on various product launches, most people get in line for the sake of getting in line.
If you're one of those folks, then by all means feel free. Otherwise, you might as well find something better to do with your time.
When Leopard was released last fall, I went by the Eaton's Centre Apple Store at around 5:30 and the lineups were ridiculous.... They wound down almost to the other end of the entire mall.... There must have been well over 1000 people in line.
So I went to dinner with my wife.... Had a nice steak, medium rare, and a lovely bottle of Beaujolais. Around 7:45, after finishing my coffee and desert, I walked back over to the Apple Store, grabbed a copy of Leopard off the shelf, paid for it, and walked back out at around 7:50.
That having been said, I might show up at the Rogers location in downtown Toronto on Friday morning, but my interest with be more journalistic than anything else. Mind you, they're also serving breakfast..... :)

What you guys are focosing on is the wrong thing... the availability of product isn't why getting in a line a littel early would be worth it...
IT'S THE LONG WAIT FOR ACTIVATION. :)
It's going to suck that every person will have 10-15 minutes with a sales rep to get your phone going. I'm going early so that I don't have to wait for all the schmoes to get their phones activated. If I get there at say 6 am, I figure I'll be out by 9 am at the latest. If you go at lunch... don't plan on working that afternoon... and Saturday!? That will be a zoo.

The instructions here in NZ for activation are simple:
Buy your phone, insert your SIM and log onto iTunes with your iPhone plugged in - activation will happen automatically.

That makes no sense. You're going to wait in line to wait 15 minutes for activation? Why not go later in the day and just breeze in there and do the 15 minutes without the wait?

I am dropping my girl off at school at 7:30am. I will then drive across the street to AT&T if the lines is nuts I will turn right around and back to my car. Then again I will just drive to the Apple store from there. THEN if its out of control I will walk. I'll just wait a couple of weeks and get it then. The first run of anything always has issue's anyway.

6% of the US phone-buying public is still quite a few though, isn't it?

That's 6% of people who expressed an interest in buying iPhone 3G, not the whole cell phone market.

Aha.
In saying that, a lot of people (and I can't vouch for the US, but certainly locally) expressed interest in getting the new iPhone...until the plans came out.

I went to o2 store at 5 this morning was third in line. By the time 8.02 rolled up there were close to 60 in line. Store only had about 40 or so. O2 messed up huge though. The online activation instore and whole enrollment system failed and completely shut down at 8.11. That's a whole nine minutes it survived. Meaning I have an iPhone with inactive sim and have to wait until store staff can register them all. Oh well.

I don't know where that our chart came from but I am in line now and from the talk I hear around EVERYWHERE had a huge line. I am about 30 back and have been here for 20 minutes. Its not bad. Apple has been bringing everybody water and coffee.

I went by the two ATT stores by my house this morning & the line was probably 200 deep. Called them & they were already sold out. They recommend pre-paying & that way I can get the two I want.
yep. Long lines everywhere here, too. And it's looking like stock will run out before the lines are completely gone. Guess I'll be waiting till next week to pick one up.

I got to my ATT store around 6:40. Was 34 in line. Only way I know this is because the guy after me counted everybody. Probably ended up being about sixty by 8:00. They had six terminals to work from, so they sent in six at a time. Got into the store around 9:40. After I got in, a few others did too, then they sold out. They sold out of all 16G by 9:15. Overall not a bad experience.

Guess what? If you went to an Apple store late in the day yesterday, you probably didn't have to wait in a line AND you probably got a phone. Same deal today. So no, I don't see any reason to take back what I said.

Most of the stores here had no phones late in the day. Not sure about today, but I know I had other things to do on Saturday, so... :)

Depends on where you live, though. Some places did sell out by afternoon.

Did any of the Apple stores sell out? I haven't seen any specific reports that any have. I was at my closest Apple store again today and they still had stacks and stacks of iPhones. They also had about 60 people waiting to buy them (though the line was moving REALLY fast).

God dang it. And here I am waiting for my local AT&T store to have mine shipped to them. I am just waiting for an email from AT&T to let me know when it ships. Just lovely.

My brother walked into our AT&T store around noon to pay my bill for me and he asked if they had any 16 GB 3G iPhones because I was thinking of buying one and they told them they had plenty of the black and white 16GB phones. I didn't get one because I just updated mine to the 2.0 firmware and saving $15. I like my $20 a month data plan with SMS messaging.

Arrived at OptusWorld in the city in Sydney (Australia) at 11.50pm 11th July. Only store in Sydney to open at midnight. The other 2 telco operators (Telstra and Vodafone) and the Apple store opened 7am.
Waited 5 hours. Line almost went around the block approx 400-500 people. Got home about 5.30am. Loaded music, took a shower then went straight back into the city for work.
They sold out of the outright 16gb black ones in an hour. The rest were only available on a contract.
