When connected to WiFi at work, I seem to be having a problem accessing my gmail account. All other WiFi functions work- Safari, YouTube, weather, etc, but anytime I try to check my gmail, I get this message:

"Cannot get mail. Mail was unable to connect to server "imap.gmail.com" using SSL on port 993. Verify that this server supports SSL, and that your account settings are correct"

When I'm on my home network, everything is fine, and there is no way I can make changes to the WiFi router at work, which is a simple router with no security, that is there as a courtesy to customers, as well as employees.

Are there any settings I can change in the iPhone so it will function at work at work, and home?

Thanks.

Probably due to firewall restrictions on your work network. It is probably blocking port 993

Is there a range of port #'s I could try?

I think Google only have IMAP set up on port 993, so you're out of luck there. It might be worth speaking to your network manager (or I.T. department, etc) and seeing if they'll open that port for you. That's really your only option.
