Now being an iphone owner I periodically get emails from apple regarding the new 3g iphone, which im positive a majority of you get as well. With the release of the 3g on friday i recieved an email entitles :iPhone 3G at the Apple Store. 8:00 a.m. Friday. Part of the email list what you will need to bring on friday....

What to bring.
To purchase and activate iPhone 3G, you need the following:*

Credit card
Social security number
Valid, government-issued photo ID
Your current wireless account number and password or PIN (if you’re new to AT&T)
Remember to sync your current iPhone one last time before you come into the store.

now what do they mean by remeber to sync your current iPhone one last time before you come into the store? I don't believe its possible for apple to make our iphones obsolete if we get a 3g version... just an odd note that they added to this email.. Any ideas of what they may be thinkin with this?

It's simple. When you activate your new iPhone, the old one will be deactivated. That means you won't be able to synch it anymore. They want you to do a last synch before it's deactivated so you don't lose any data.

As far as I understand it, and someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but once your account on your old iPhone is deactivated, it won't work for anything. Period. An unactivated phone will only display the "you must activate" screen (or whatever that screen says) and nothing more. Sucks, but that's how it works.

and as far as switching between my old and my 3g with just the switch of the sim card.. is that going to be possible?

Highly unlikely.

According to the iPhone 3G FAQ on Gizmodo, you can use the original iPhone as an iPod Touch.

If I buy my friend's old iPhone when he updates to iPhone 3G, can I use it as a cheap iPod touch without activating it? Yup! Everything but the calling features should be active, except it will say "No SIM" at the top. Thanks Andy.

We'll need to see this in action before I believe it. Right now, once your phone is deactivated, it's DOA.

I believe they are requesting for people to make sure they have the most current back up of their old iPhone is to transfer information. See # 3 & 4 here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2109

I'd have to think this was true, or otherwise there's no point in keeping it. Probably a potential lawsuit as well.

thanks, i need to know this too....will this be a problem as well for those of us who *Have no att* but want to buy the iPhone 3G for the full price? Will it be a useless machine that wont even serve as an iPod?
