A few months ago, a friend of a friend was staying at my house and wanted to plug in her iphone. Apparently she meant to plug it into her charger, but I misunderstood and went to plug it into the doc for my old 15gig Ipod. She became a bit irate when she saw what I was about to do to her baby...
So a few questions:
1. Would it have actually seated and plugged in?
2. If it had, would it have harmed it?
3. If it hadn't harmed it, would it have charged it and all, etc?
Or is it just a completely different plug? I would think it would be the same because it would make no sense for Apple to re-invent the wheel... except that they would want to sell more product.

Plugging in the iphone to any ipod chargers will work just fine. The only thing you must be wary of when plugging in to an old dock is that since the dock isn't designed for the iphone, if it's torqued on in the wrong direction it could snap off the 30 pin connector on the dock. I think your best bet is to just unplug the cable from the dock and just plug it directly in to the bottom of the iphone. This will charge the phone the way it was intended.

Thanks! Good to know. So is the cable any different at all? If I... say... plug it into my DLO FM transmitter, will it work the same? I can just put some felt bad behind to take up the space if necessary, but there's no point in modifying if it works fine.

it is no different from a charging standpoint, but the functionality of the fm transmitter won't work.

I just realized... if put in some new item like a car kit, it won't work either, right?
