I was just curious about what the majority of people are planning on doing, since the original iphone seems to still be quite popular, and should anything happen to anyone's shiny new 3G, they'd have a very comparable backup.

After the very good experience I had with my previous iPhone I will trust that the iPhone 3G will be just as dependable. Besides, I have my trusty old SE W880i and my iPod still if things go wrong.
I sold my current iPhone to help fund my purchase for a new iPhone 3G. Sold the 8GB for £120 and the new 16GB one is going to cost £159. Luckily I wasn't tied in to a contract with O2 and my T-Mobile contract just came to an end, plus I just went away for 2 weeks so didn't need my iPhone much, so Apple timed it perfectly. Just 5 days of waiting around now lol.

Given that the current iPhone is far from "old" since it just came out a year ago, I think it's bound to keep at least some of its resale value for a short time, say a couple of months after 3G hits on Friday. I'll probably hang on to mine until I see exactly what the resale value is. If it's over $100 I'll probably sell it. If it's under $100 I'll hang on to it.

I hope to at least get $50 for my 4gb with a shattered screen. That seems to be the going rate on ebay right now. I guess some people consider $150 replacement part + $50 for the phone is worth it. For $200 they could have an unlocked iphone on any network. That's assuming they want to replace the screen themselves however. I'm sure there's a huge market for DIY'ers though.
