Using my iPod Classic with the earphones supplied.

I've noticed some 'crackling' when the volume is high and a lot of 'hiss'.

I've tried it with other earphones (albeit the ones supplied with the iPod) and they seem to be the same.

Is it just a case of the earphones supplied are pretty crap and the solution would be to buy another set?

Another thing, are the Apple in-ear earphones any good, and if not, could anyone recommend a set to save me having to read thousands of reviews!

Cheers!

Might be a problem with your headphone jack, or most likely the connector that goes into the Ipod. Also, Apples standard buds that come with the Ipod suck IMHO. I would save up for some Shure's, also Sennhesier makes some great IEM's. But if you're on a budget like I am, look into iFrogz, or even perhaps Sound Squared: www.sound2co.com You can find those on Amazon. Check over at Head-Fi.org and see if you can't find some good reviews.
