I'm about to get my wife's iphone and heard that you no longer get the free 200 text messages with the plan. Now, does that mean that any text messages I receive will be charged to my account or am I only charged for messages that I send out?

I believe it would work that way. You can still get the same 200 texts a month as the first iphone plan but now it's an additional $5 on top of the $70 for the new rate plan.
You get charged for both sent and received messages I believe. If this is a concern, I would pay the $5 extra.

Sorry for sounding dense, but surely you only get charged for receiveing text messages when you are abroad? Sending them yes, but not for receiving them?
I'm in UK so obviously things are a little bit different, but that sounds like the kind of deal a thrid world country would have where only the rich can afford a mobile?

In the US we get charged for both sending and receiving, at least to my knowledge. I know through Verizon, my previous carrier, I got charged. I am pretty sure it is the same with AT&T. However, I have no idea about international plans and services so you're probably correct in not receiving charges for incoming texts.

That is correct. Sending and receiving on AT&Ts network charges or deduces from your rate plan depending. When you travel abroad expect the same, or higher rates as long as you're signed up with AT&T.

I didn't realize they changed the plan to not include 200 texts. Plus, the extra 10.00 and I need to pay 9.00 for earlier nights and weekends, the monthly cost is getting up there.

I'd personally find that outrageous but then again I'm used to how things work over here so it's understandable....how do the charges compare for sending receiveing....In the UK a normal PAYG phone would cost about 10p to send a message and nothing to receive it. I assume it should therefore be about 10c to send and 10c to receive...that would probably be reasonable.

Yep, an additional 10 cents a message.

Just to confirm, the new text message plan means that even iphone 2G owners will no longer have 200 free text messages, right?

The plan for the original iPhone remains unchanged. You still get 200 text messages with it.

Hence why I'm on T-Mobile's Sidekick Plan :) Unlimited text and internet for only $1.00/day :)
Internet works perfect too :)

Maybe we should stop bumping old threads, and change your title away from "banned".
Although it seems to be a trend with people reviving old posts at the moment
