This article states that early adopters of the original iPhone will have to pay $399 for the 8gig iPhone instead of $199 because we are currently under contract. Anyone know anything about it?

I've read other articles that state that any current AT&T subscriber who has the original iPhone will be able to upgrade for the $199 price. If you just recently joined AT&T and didn't get the iPhone, and are not eligible for a phone upgrade, then it seems you have to pay a higher price.

Read it more carefully. It doesn't say early adopters, it says early upgraders. In other words, if you're eligible for an upgrade, no matter what phone you have, you'll be able to get the subsidized price. If you aren't eligible for an upgrade, you'll have to pay the full price.

I bought my iPhone about three weeks after they came out and I've been eligible for an upgrade for the last couple of months. I'd say with some certainty that most of the "early adopters" of the 1.0 iPhone will be able to get 3G at the promo price. Those who won't are people who have bought an iPhone in the last eight months or so.

it says on the site that anyone who had a 1.0 iPhone can get the 3g for the subsidized price. where did you get your information that people have had the iphone for a few months can't get it.

ATT has been very clear about it. You have to be "upgrade eligible" in order to get the promo price. Not everyone who owns a 1.0 iPhone is currently upgrade eligible.

ATT has now clarified their upgrade paths. Anyone who currently owns a 1.0 iPhone is upgrade eligible automatically (http://www.att.com/gen/press-room?pid=6158&cat=32&u=621).
