The rumour is that the 3G will be a brick until AT&T turn the service on.

Makes sense, AT&T is not subsidizing the hardware for nuthing.

Whether u still can use it as a (psudo) PDA/music player, no word.

It'll get unlocked. I wouldn't be surprised if the phone is unlocked and running on another carrier within 24-48 hours. I am almost positive it'll be unbricked for iPod/wireless use hours after going on sale.

Just a hunch, but there's probably tons of people out there on the starting line ready to do just those things.

Oh IT WILL, but not b4r u lock yourself for 24 mos with AT&T and they turn it on for you. U don't mind paying 2 carriers, fine.
