I've had a 16G itouch for about 5months. I recently purchased another 16G itouch for my son. His has numerous icons that mine doesn't. He can also move his icons around and create new ones on the screen. I know he hasn't downloaded and hacks. Is there a newer software version that will update mine to the same as his? Both of are firmware versions are already at 1.1.4 (4A102). Thanks for the help.

You probably need to purchase and download the January update. I think it's like $10.

Ok, there is no new software VERSION, however, there is an upgrade that is hiding on your iPod. Everything you have is locked under a key that was available from apple for the past 4 and a half months. This key cost $19.95 US through iTunes, and was an optional "upgrade"

The truth was that this upgrade was included within the 1.1.3 update, and the software people bought was just a key to unlock it (it was around 7.6 KBs, so nothing at all really)

Apple included this stuff due to massive complaints about the iPod touch's being a major step back from the iPhone, without good reason to take away apps that already existed.

Apple tried to appease them. A $20 upgrade wasn't what they wanted. They wanted free.

Sorry for the history lesson, but just letting you know it is about to happen again.

There is a new version of software called "iPhone OS 2.0" coming out for your iPod (yes, its called iPhone, but the touch runs the iPhone's OS)

For the touch users, this will add application ability (the ability to run programs you have gotten for money or for free from iTunes)

Also lots of little tweaks will be included.

It will allow you to download it for free, we expect, but you will be charged another $9.95 to upgrade the features. We can't be sure exactly how apple is going to do it this time, but keep on these boards to find out when the new software is available.

For the time being, Apple has taken down the Apps from iTunes for some reason, so you can't buy the applications or features just yet. Apple's phone people say it will be back on after the release of the new software.

Just hold on and ask more questions then :D We will tell you how to upgrade.

Oh ok, so I should just wait for the new one to come out? Will that include the previous upgrades that you were talking about or will I have to upgrade both separately?

you have no option but to wait, yeah.

We don't know if it is going to include the previous updates or not at this stage.

No one knows if the 2.0 update will include the optional January software package or not. More than likely, it won't. It doesn't hurt to wait though as the 2.0 update will come out in less than a month.

No one knows the answer to these questions for certain right now. HOWEVER, the January update has been REMOVED from the iTunes store. My guess is this is to avoid confusion when the 2.0 update goes live. I wouldn't be surprised if the 2.0 update includes the Jan. update. Just to repeat: You CAN'T perform the Jan. update now as it is no longer available through iTunes.

For clarification, the Jan. update included the following applications: Mail, , stocks, Weather, Maps, and Notes.

It also included the ability to display lyrics, and the ability to move icons on the home screen and use Webclips to create icons.

Or the anti-jailbreak fanboys.

Just for reference - you can jailbreak and not STEAL the January Software Update applications - I've purchased them and I know others have too.

If it's no longer available for purchase and the 2.0 firmware isn't out yet, then it would make sense that the "new old" features would be included, as well. Considering that 2.0 will bring push e-mail, Exchange, etc, it would be a necessity to have Mail, etc.

I can settle this debate quickly- take the new touch and give your son yours! You did pay for both of them after all...

If anyone has learned anything from Apple, it is this: NEVER assume anything. Apple could have taken them off the store as they are going to re-sell them at a different price, make a new package including those (ie not the 2.0 update), or they were having compatibility issues with the new firmware so they are re-programming them. There are literally 1000's of reasons why Apple could have taken them down. I see your logic but one should never, ever make assumptions when it comes to Apple. It was back in 2006 whenever Apple held a little conference just to announce a $100+ leather case for iPods and the iPod Hi-Fi. Both were received as being ho-hum announcements yet everyone assumed that Apple was cooking something big such as a new iPod.

Apple could very well release the 2.0 firmware and the software package separately in the store or they could combine them. It would kind of suck if Apple combined them as people already payed $20 and now they have to pay an additional $10. That means that the people who initially purchased the package could have just waited a few months and payed half the amount for a worthwhile update.
